Sarah Spicer and Jessica Spicer of Bahama, N.C. signed a birdie-studded scorecard to place them atop the leaderboard of the 44th Carolinas Women’s Four-Ball Championship, hosted by Orangeburg Country Club in Orangeburg, S.C. Jayne Pardus of Daniel Island, S.C. and her partner Kerry Rutan of Mount Pleasant, S.C. have a two-stroke advantage over the senior division field.
”It was one of those rounds, everything sort of fell into place,” the Spicer twins concurred after their 8-under-par, 64.
The Spicer duo battled their way back from a less than ideal start in their opening round. The pair had parred the first three holes of the Championship and then would drop a stroke on the par-4, No. 4. The fourth hole at Orangeburg Country Club is a short par-4 that was the toughest hole all day, allowing only three birdies but it was accountable for 16 double-bogeys.
“I don't think either one of us hit bad shots into the green, it was just a tough back left pin. We were left with really tricky chip shots and could not get an up-and-down.” Sarah Spicer said following their round.
After the tough fourth hole was completed for the recent Virginia Tech graduates, they would not sniff another bogey for the rest of their round. In fact, beginning on the following hole, No. 5, they would go on a sub-par streak, carding birdies on 7 of the 14 holes that remained and eagle on another.
“On No.11, Sarah played a safe shot, short of the water in the fairway, so I decided to hit three-wood trying to get it close. I pulled it.” Jessica Spicer said about the pair's lone eagle. “I was left with 83 yards left to the hole and played a flighted wedge shot that I thought was perfect. My dad was up there near the green and he told us it went in.”
The defending champions, Rachel Kuehn of Asheville, N.C. and Jensen Castle of West Columbia, S.C. trail the lead by one-stroke, sitting in second at 7-under-par, 65. They had a bogey-free round on Tuesday and carded an eagle and five birdies. One of the birdies came from Kuehn’s chip-in from the back of the eighteenth green.
In the senior division, Pardus and Rutan pleasantly rolled in four birdies and only one bogey on their opening round. Their round showed the field the true benefit of a four-ball format, Rutan would contribute low scores when Pardus could not, and vice versa. The palmetto state duo fired off a 3-under-par, 69 to grasp the senior division lead.
Within striking distance behind them sits Natalie Huff of Elgin, S.C. partnered with Suzann Bartley of Columbia, S.C. in second with a score of 1-under-par, 71. There is a two-way tie for third at even-par, 72; Carol Ackerson of New Bern, N.C. partnered with Janis Romeo of Charlotte, N.C. and the team of past senior division champion Kim Briele of New Bern, N.C. and five-time champion Patty Moore of Pinehurst, N.C.
The 44th Carolinas Women’s Four-Ball Championship will conclude on Wednesday, starting with tee times at 8:00 a.m.
