Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University is in pristine condition for the 61st North Carolina Amateur Championship, but the firm fairways and fast greens provided a challenge for the field today in the opening round. Spencer Oxendine of Fayetteville, N.C. took advantage of the conditions and fired off a 3-under-par, 69 in the opening round.
Oxendine is a rising junior on the North Carolina State University men’s golf team, which means Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State is his home course during the school year. He is very comfortable with this track and it showed on his scorecard.
Oxendine started his round on No. 10 with a birdie that got his momentum going early. He carded a train of pars until two consecutive birdies on Nos. 15 and 16 catapulted him atop the leaderboard. “I played pretty solid the first 12 holes, kind of limped coming in, but it was a really good day overall and I hit a lot of greens,” he said. “The ball striking was there, but I didn’t really have the putter going today.”
After making the turn at 3-under-par, 33, the 2018 Creed Junior Boys’ Champion carded another birdie on No. 3 to solidify his seat on top of the leaderboard entering the second round. “I put myself in a good position. You can’t win it on the first day, but you can certainly lose it so I just put myself in a good position today.”
Second position is held by a three-way-tie between Clayson Good of Durham, N.C., Columb Knight of Raleigh, N.C. and Timothy Driver of Holly Springs, N.C. just one stroke off the lead at 2-under-par, 70.
A birdie on No. 1 set the tone for Good’s strong opening round. Carding only one bogey and two more birdies on Nos. 7 and 13, consistency was key for him throughout the day. The reigning North Carolina Junior Boys’ Champion remarked, “I'm a good par-5 player and there’s three par-5s on the front. I went 2-under on the par-5s today. I didn’t make too many bogeys or mistakes, I just played pretty well.”
Knight and Driver had more dynamic opening rounds that landed them towards the top of the leaderboard. Knight started off his round with a birdie on No. 10 (he started his round on the back nine), which led to three more birdies on the day. While Driver fired off an outstanding six birdies to finish the day one shot off the lead.
There are nine players that carded 1-under-par, 71 and seven players that finished with an even-par, 72, so the leaderboard is incredibly tight at the top. With 54 holes left to be played, it is anybody’s game at this point. However, the battle to make the cut is sure to bring exciting competition tomorrow. After the second round, the field will be cut to the low 60 scores and ties for the weekend.
The second round will begin tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. with starting times until 2:14 p.m. off of Nos. 1 and 10. Stay tuned to our Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for live coverage of the second round of the 61st North Carolina Amateur Championship.
