Pate Leads After Round 1, NC Junior Girls' Championship

Macy Pate of Winston-Salem is the first round stroke play qualifying leader at the 25th playing of the North Carolina Junior Girls’ Championship hosted by Catawba Country Club in Newton, N.C. Pate registered the only subpar score of the day at 2-under-par, 70.
Macy Pate’s round started off steady with a 1-over-par, 37 on her first nine. Her inward nine was spectacular. After an unpleasant bogey on No.10, she picked up her second birdie of the day on No. 11. With two birdies behind her, she was able to pick up some mojo on No.14 and birdied Nos. 14, 15 and 17.
There is a two-way tie for second place at even-par, 72 between Kiera Bartholomew of Wake Forest and Kayla Dowell of Mebane.
Kiera Bartholomew’s round began with a bogey on her opening hole and one other on her front nine, but she would record two cancelling birdies on the par-4, Nos. 4 and 8. Bartholomew’s round stayed balanced on her inward nine when she recorded one bogey and one birdie to finish at even-par 72. Kayla Dowell’s even-par came from her performance on the back nine. She carded a 2-under-par, 34 to bring her total score for the day to even-par, 72.
Behind the pair tied for second place, there is a four-way tie for fourth. Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, Lily Kate Watson of Raleigh, Ava Lucas of Raleigh and Sophie Lauture of Charlotte are all tied at 2-over-par, 74.
Anna Howerton of Winston-Salem, Gabriela Cruz of High Point and Ella Kue of Kings Mountain all signed 3-over-par, 75 scorecards on Tuesday, tying each other for the eighth spot.
Play will continue on Wednesday morning with the second round of stroke play qualifying to determine the top 32 spots for match play. The Round of 32 matches will begin immediately after stroke play qualifying is completed.
