Match Play is Underway at the Carolinas Four-Ball

 

CAMDEN, S.C. (May 1, 2021) --  Round of 32 and Round of 16 results of the 70th Carolinas Four-Ball Championship at Camden Country Club in Camden, S.C. on May 1, 2021. The field is competing at 6,455 yards (par 35-35--70).

Round of 32

The biggest upset of the day took place in the first match of the round. Christian Bailey of Matthews, N.C. and Travon Willis of Indian Trail, S.C. made it into the match play yesterday evening after winning a nine-side, three-hole playoff for the 32nd seed. This morning the duo took down the No. 1 seed, Cameron Akers of Asheville, N.C. and Zachary Reuland of Rock Hill, S.C. after a 4 & 3 finish.


The sixth seed side of Daniel McBrien and Garrett Risner of Holly Springs, N.C. won by the largest margin of the day at 7 & 6 to secure their seat in the Round of 16. Al Dickens IV of Charlotte, N.C. and Stephen Lavenets of Willow Springs, N.C. took their first match of the day to 21 holes, defeating Evan Boyer of Morrisville, N.C. and Garett Heffner of Apex, N.C. on No. 3 green.


Three of the Round of 32 matches ended in upsets. The No. 32 seed Bailey and Willis, the No. 18 seed Crawford Reeves of Taylors, S.C. and McCuen Elmore of Lancaster, S.C., and the No. 17 seed Brent Roof of Columbia, S.C. and Paul Tucker of Waxhaw, N.C. will advance to the Round of 16. 

 

Round of 16

After playing in the morning, one would expect a tired field heading into the day’s second set of matches. However, the players were able to keep the energy high for another round of head-to-head competition.


Reeves and Elmore faced off against the No. 2 seeded co-medalists Chris Cassetta of High Point, N.C. and Steven Brame of Henderson, N.C. The 18th seed duo was able to defeat the lowest remaining seed with a swift 5 & 4 finish.
 

The fourth seed, Chad Wilfong of Charlotte, N.C. and Davis Womble of Winston Salem, N.C. took down the veteran team of Garland Farrell of Greenville, S.C. and Michael Sims of Lexington, S.C. 5 & 3.


Ryan Reynolds of Camden, S.C. and Brandon Cemprola of Columbia, S.C. are two local favorites left in the competition. Reynolds and Cemprola advanced to the Quarterfinals for the second straight year and will face off against 2013 winners, Roof and Tucker, tomorrow.


McClure Thompson of Little River, S.C. and Mitchell Vance of Hartsville, S.C. are the only co-medalist still standing. They won their Round of 16 match with a close 1 up finish against Dillard Pruitt of Simpsonville, S.C. and Rob Butler of Camden, S.C.. There are still two high seeds entering the Quarterfinals tomorrow.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
