Girls’ Division
Nicole Adam of Pinehurst, N.C. and Joon Jang of Bluffton, S.C. are tied for the lead finishing 3-over-par, 143 total today. Adam is the No. 1 ranked golfer in the Carolinas Junior Girls’ Rankings and Jang is the reigning Carolinas Junior Girls’ Champion, which should make for an interesting final round.
Adam’s strategy for a strong round today was based on her analysis of the front nine. She said, “I think the front nine is harder on this course and I tend to play the back nine much better.”
Yesterday Adam was 4-over on the front nine, but today she focused on hitting greens and managed to go 1-under by the turn. That opened the door for her to play more aggressively on the back. With a bogey on No. 10 and a birdie to match it on No. 14, Adam finished 1-under, 69 today and holds the only under-par round in the girls’ division.
Jang had a tough start to the second round carding double bogey on No. 1. “I made a double on the first hole and that made me nervous through the rest of my round, so today was pretty exhausting,” said Jang.
From No. 2, Jang played a bogey free round and sank two long putts for birdies on Nos. 5 and 18. She said, “My strength today was my mental game. After my double bogey, I was able to save so many pars and make good putts to finish well and that is thanks to my mental toughness.” An even-par, 70 finish today sealed her seat atop the leaderboard heading into the final round.
Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, N.C. earned solo third after a 3-over-par, 73 today for 7-over-par total. Just one stroke behind her is a tie for fourth between Adrian Anderson of Murrells Inlet, S.C. and Kiera Bartholomew of Wake Forest, N.C. at 8-over-par, 148 total.
Boys’ Division
Nicholas Gross of Downington, Pa. propelled himself from fifth place up to the lead after an outstanding 3-under-par, 67 today. That score ties the low round of the week and leaves him at 4-under-par, 136 total.
“It was a very good day for me,” said Gross. “I was able to make a lot of birdies, limit the bogeys and hit most of the greens so just getting rid of the mistakes was key today.”
The greens at Hope Valley Country Club are tough to say the least. The classic Donald Ross design plays fast and missing the greens can make for nearly impossible up and downs. That makes Gross’s five birdie putts even more impressive.
Gross said, “I hit a lot of great wedge shots in close and on the right side so I had some easy leads which led me to sink a lot of 10 and 15-footers.”
Caden Baker of Mebane, N.C. is tied for second due to a similar fate on the greens.
Baker said, “This course requires a lot of thinking coming into the greens, because if you short-side yourself out here, you just are not going to get up and down. Missing in the right spots and taking the long putts when you can is so important.”
Taking his own advice Baker sank three birdie putts for a 1-under-par, 69 round today. That puts Baker in a tie for second at 3-under-par, 137 total with Ben Jordan of Greensboro, N.C.
Luke Walmet of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. is in solo fourth with an even-par, 140 total through round two. Just one stroke behind him in solo fifth is Tyler DeChellis of Clayton, N.C. finishing 1-over-par, 141 total.
The Final Round of the 3rd Hope Valley Junior Invitational will begin tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. with a double tee start that runs until 10:30 a.m.
