Patrick Stepheson of Four Oaks, N.C. and Austin Bonfiglio of Holly Springs, N.C. were co-medalists today at the North Carolina Amateur Match Play with a score of five-under-par, 139 total after two rounds of stroke-play qualifying.

“I just wanted to hit greens and fairways and give myself looks at birdies, and just take pars. I knew I had to shoot around even to get in, and that’s what my goal was,” Bonfiglio said.

Bofiglio said that his game plan tomorrow will remain the same, and he will just worry about his match when it comes. He added that making a lot of birdies would also help him out.

Stephenson had one bogey today on No. 14, but carded a round full of pars and birdies.

Stephenson said that the last two days he played on the more conservative side but tomorrow, he will be more aggressive and try to make more birdies.

“I’m just going to try and keep playing well, make a few more birdies, and try and put the pressure on whoever I’m playing a little more instead of just cruising,” Stephenson said.

Garrett Risner had his lowest lifetime round on his home course today at the Club at 12 Oaks. Risner carded an eight-under-par, 64 to take him to four-under-par, 140 total.

Heading into match play as the No. 4 seed, Risner said that he is going to keep playing smart, and keep doing the same thing; put it in the middle of the green and make some putts.

Risner also said that he usually airs on the side of conservative playing in match play, but who knows what tomorrow will bring.

“It depends on where I’m at and where the match is at,” Risner said.

Five players competed for the final match play spot in a playoff this evening. In a four hole playoff, Dean Channell of Pinehurst, N.C. secured his place to face off against Stephenson tomorrow.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.
