Cress Cards Low Score of the Day at NC Amateur Match Play

Walker Cress of Concord, N.C carded an impressive five-under-par, 67 to take the low score of the day in round one of the stroke qualifying at the 11th North Carolina Amateur Match-Play Championship.

“I have a pretty good game plan off the tee right now, so I’m just going to try and hit the ball in the fairway, because that’s a must out here. Just going to try and keep it in the fairway, play it one shot at a time, and not think about making the cut; just go out and have fun,” Cress said.

Cress played a solid round filled with six birdies, and an eagle on No. 5. While he admits the rough got him on No. 18, he knows that staying out of it is a crucial part of getting around this course.

In a three-way-tie, Peter Fountain of Raleigh, N.C., Bryson Boyette of Wilson and N.C. Austin Bonfiglio of Holly Springs, N.C. came in at three-under-par, 69.

The front nine seemed to play easier for most of the players, averaging a little more than one stroke less than the back nine. There were 135 birdies made on the front nine versus 105 on the back nine.

John Farley of Charlotte, N.C. and Nic Brown of Wendell, N.C. also came out strong, shooting two-under-par, 70.

Despite a short rain delay in the late afternoon, all of the groups completed their round and will play their second round of stroke play beginning tomorrow at 7:30 a.m.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.
