Drayton Stewart of Charleston, S.C. is the 69th Carolinas Junior Boys' champion. Stewart shot an even-par, 72 in the final round to hold off Bronson Myers of Columbia, S.C. and win his first ever CGA title by one stroke.
Stewart entered the day one stroke up on Myers, and the two went back and forth for much of the day. Through 12 holes Myers had a one stroke lead, but Stewart was able to make birdie on No. 13 while Myers made bogey, and Stewart never gave up the lead again. Both Myers and Stewart bogeyed No. 16, and then both finished with pars on Nos. 17 and 18.
"I honestly didn't think it was going to come with the way (Myers) was putting," said Stewart, "But I made a couple putts down the stretch that sealed the deal."
The 2019 Clemson commit admitted that his game off the tee struggled all three days, but he said he won it with his short game.
"I was hitting my wedges, putting, and chipping very well. The tee shots were just staying in play and I was scraping out pars."
Stewart said he's looking ahead to more accomplishments in the future after his first CGA win.
"It feels great, and I'm just looking to get a lot more," Stewart said with a grin.
Stewart and Myers both earned spots on the Carolinas Team for the 36th Carolinas-Virginias Junior Team Matches at Country Club of North Carolina on August 11th and 12th.
The tournament was conducted as 54 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, the field was cut to the low 70 scores and ties.
