Dunlap and Vaugh win S.C. Jr. Match Play

No. 3 seed Emily Dunlap won her first CGA title with a 3 and 1 victory in the championship match.

ROCK HILL, S.C. (July 13, 2018) -- Semifinal and final results of the South Carolina Junior Match Play Championship at Rock Hill Country Club in Rock Hill, S.C. on Friday, July 13 (6,589 yards, Par 36-36--72, Course Rating 72.2/134).

Emily Dunlap of Greenville, S.C. and Keegan Vaugh of Myrtle Beach, S.C. are the 2018 South Carolina Junior Match Play champions in the girls' and boys' divisions, respectively. Dunlap won her championship match 3 and 1 while Vaugh won his semifinal match 1 up and his championship match 4 and 3.

Dunlap started out her final strong, going 2 up in the first three holes and proceeded to never give up that lead to Anna Grace Brock of Greenwood, S.C. Dunlap would go on to have 4 birdies in the match including the par-three 17th to win the match.

"I really tried to stick to the philosophy of hitting fairways and greens," said Dunlap, "Then I just rolled in putts when I could."

This straightforward approach worked well, as the rising high school senior lost only two holes the whole match.

Brock's wins came at opportune times, though, one of which was a birdie on the par-five 15th after reaching the green in two that cut Dunlap's lead to 2 up. Dunlap admitted that it was "nerve-racking," but a par on No. 16 and the final birdie on No. 17 sealed her fate as champion.

Vaugh went through a similar match, jumping out to an early 3 up lead after 4 holes. He too would never give up that lead and would go on to only lose two holes for the whole match.

"I knew it was going to be tough these last two matches," said Vaugh, "I'm just happy to grind it out and be able to hit fairways and greens."

While Vaugh's ball striking was certainly strong all week, today his putting was certainly what won him his matches.

"I was just picking good lines with my caddie and they were rolling in," said the rising high school junior.

Both Dunlap and Vaugh won their first ever CGA titles with their wins.

The South Carolina Junior Match Play Championship begins with 18 holes of stroke play qualifying for all divisions. The boys' division was cut to the low 64 for match play. The girls’ division was cut to the low 16 for match play.

Entry is open to any male or female amateur golfer who has not reached their 19th birthday by July 13, 2018, who has not started college, is a legal resident of South Carolina, is a member or their parent is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA handicap index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.4. Entries are subject to rejection at any time, including during the event, by the CGA or the host club. The reason for rejection may include unbecoming conduct or cell phone use during a stipulated round. All players must conform to the “USGA Rules of Amateur Status” as specified in “The Rules of Golf”.
