Maria Atwood of Holly Springs, N.C. won her first CGA title at the 62nd Carolinas Junior Girls' Championship at Croasdaile Country Club in Durham, N.C. She carded a two-under-par 70 on the last day of play to finish at an overall score of one-over-par 217.
Atwood positioned herself near the top of the leader board after the second round, giving herself the opportunity to take the home the title in the final round. Under continuous rain in the second round, she carded a two-over-par 74 and was tied for third headed into the final day of competition.
Saving her best round for last, Atwood had a seamless front nine with no bogeys and one birdie. Continuing her momentum onto the back nine, she birdied two of her last seven holes to take home her first CGA title.
"I made a lot of pars out there," Atwood said. "Even though a couple pins were definitely challenging, I hit it in there close and made a couple of putts, and it all comes down to that."
The rising high school freshman was all smiles when she came off the course as her mom and grandparents awaited her with cheers and hugs.
"It's amazing," Atwood said. "Words can't describe how happy I am right now, it's just incredible. I'm totally shocked."
Two shots behind Atwood and in the runner-up position was Alexis Sudjianto of Charlotte, N.C. with a three-over-par 219. Neck and neck with Atwood all day, she carded an even-par 72 on the final day of play.
