Anna Redding of Concord, N.C. maintained her lead through the second round of the 92nd Carolinas Women's Amateur Championship. She is the only player in the field to remain under par for the tournament, and she is one-under-par at the conclusion of the second day of play at Green Valley Country Club in Greenville, S.C.
A tough second day for most of the field, Redding also suffered ups and downs throughout her round. After recording a 5-under-par 67 on the first day of competition, Redding stumbled in her first nine holes, making four bogeys.
The rising senior at the University of Virginia steadied herself after the turn and was able to card pars on eight of the nine holes. Describing herself as "off" today and unable to make putts, Redding is looking to keep her drives in the fairway and sink more putts during the final round tomorrow.
"I'm ready to go for tomorrow," Redding said. "After seeing what I can shoot on this golf course and then giving it back today, I'm excited to attack the course tomorrow just because I know I can play well. I'm ready to go and make a few more putts tomorrow."
Kate Hill of Clemson, S.C. maintained second place after today's round, finishing one shot behind Redding. The rising junior at Anderson University carded a 4-over-par 76 and is even-par for the tournament headed into Tuesday's play. Though she missed a few approach shots and putts today, Hill said she is focusing on the positives of her play over the last two days.
"I get to play golf tomorrow, which is awesome and always makes me happy," Hill said. "I was super pumped about my round yesterday, but I was really happy staying in the 70s today. That was big for me. This has been two good starting days for me."
Redding and Hill are the only two players in the field who remain even or under par for the tournament. In a four-way tie for third is 2016 champion Ashley Sloup of Southport, N.C., Reona Hirai of Summersville, S.C., Kathryn Carson of Mooresville, N.C. and 2017 runner-up Victoria Huskey of Greenville, S.C. They are all two-over-par for the tournament. In the field of 105 golfers, only one finished in red numbers in the second round. Anna Morgan of Spartanburg, S.C. carded a one-under-par 71 in the second round and is 8-over for the tournament.
In the Carolinas division, Pam Prescott of Piedmont, S.C. is dominating the field. She was the only player in red numbers on Sunday, carding a 2-under-par 70 with four birdies. In the second round, she recorded a 76 and had a strong back nine with no bogeys. She currently leads the division by eight strokes headed into Tuesday's final round.
The championship is conducted at 54 holes of stroke play (no cut). All players, regardless of Handicap Index, have the option to play in the Championship Division (approximately 6,100 yards) or the Carolinas Division (approximately 5,200 yards)
Overall champion will be determined from contestants playing in the Championship Division. Awards will also be given for the low senior in the Championship and Carolinas division (ages 50-64) and the Super Senior in the Carolinas Division (ages 65 and over)
Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 13th birthday by June 3, 2018, maintains a residence in North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN Handicap Index at a CGA member club.
