Kuehn Claims Vicki DiSantis Girls' Championship
Final results from the 13th Vicki DiSantis Girls' Championship hosted by Pine Island CC in Charlotte, NC on Sunday, May 13, 2018 (6,012 yards, par 35-37—72)
Heading in to the final round of the Vicki DiSantis Girls' Championship, Rachel Kuehn of Asheville, N.C. found herself in familiar territory. Kuehn, a high school junior, lead the 2017 Vicki DiSantis, but ultimately finished in second place. "I told myself I'm not doing this again. I was so close last year and I didn't finish the round very well. I'm just very happy to finally win this tournament and a CGA (Carolinas Golf Association) junior championship" said the Asheville native. Kuehn's second round of two under par 70 along with her first round 69 tied the championship scoring record of five under par 139.
Kuehn started her second round birdying four of her first eight holes, but three bogeys in the middle part of the round brought the field back in to play. "I got off to a great start, but hit a rough patch in the middle" said Kuehn. After a bogey on the par three thirteenth, Kuehn hit her second shot on the par five fourteenth to eight feet and made the putt for an eagle three. Kuehn followed up the eagle with a birdie on the par five fifteenth and coasted home to a three shot victory.
Katherine Schuster of Kitty Hawk, N.C. finished in second place at two under par 142. Schuster, a high school freshman who won her division in the Drive, Chip and Putt at Augusta National in April, had the low round of the day of three under par 69. Amanda Sambach of Davidson, N.C. birdied her last two holes to finish with a second round of two under par 70 and a two day total of one under par 143.
The Vicki DiSantis Junior Girls' Championship is 36 holes of stroke play competition. Entry is open to any female amateur golfer ages 12 to 18, who has not started college, maintains a residence in North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.3.
