Scott Harvey of Greensboro had been thinking about this moment all year. With his victory Sunday at the 24th North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship, the 39-year-old matches his father, Bill, with eight overall CGA titles. Bill Harvey was an amateur golf legend who passed away in 2013.
"I was trying to make the Walker Cup team, so I didn't play in any CGA events," said Harvey, the third ranked mid-amateur in the world. "All year I was thinking, 'I really need to play in a CGA event. I want the same amount of wins as my dad'. That personally, to me, means a lot."
Harvey won the championship held at High Point Country Club's Willow Creek Course by nine strokes, the largest margin in the event's history (68-67-74--209). "This is my only CGA event this year, and to be able to win it, I'm very fortunate," said Harvey, the six-time reigning CGA Player of the Year. In eight North Carolina Mid-Amateur starts, Harvey has notched two wins and five runner-up finishes.
Starting the final round with a six-stroke lead, Harvey placed his opening tee shot well off the fairway behind a tree. Making bogey, he quickly rebounded with a birdie on the second hole. Hitting 10-of-14 fairways and 8-of-18 greens in regulation, Harvey recorded three birdies and five bogeys. His three-day total of 7-under-par was the only score below par as the field faced Willow Creek's difficult greens.
The only player to break par Sunday at Willow Creek, Daniel Neveu of Pinehurst, carded two-under 70 to catapult into second place (74-74-70--218). He shared runner-up honors with Justin Pennell of Lenoir (68-78-72) and Ryan Sharpe of Greensboro (73-70-75).
The North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship is conducted at 54 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, there is a cut to the low 60 scores and ties. Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 30th birthday by the first day of the championship, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 5.4.
The CGA wishes to thank the members and staff of High Point Country Club, especially the Director of Golf Jim Brotherton and Willow Creek's Course Superintendent David Johnson.
