An even-par 72 was enough for Rachel and Tommy Jones to secure the 20th Parent-Child Championship at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C. With the win, the duo secured their first CGA victories.
The format for the championship is 18 holes of modified alternate shot. Playing in two-person teams, both team members hit from the tee, select one ball to be played, then play alternate shot until the ball is holed.
"We had a really good time together," remarked Tommy on the pair's victory. "It was a lot of fun to be with [Rachel] and we finally got [a win.]" Rachel echoed the statements of her father with a smile on her face. "We really don't get to compete together like this a lot," said Rachel. "It is always good to come together once a year and play with each other."
The duo started steady on their inward nine, remaining at even-par through their first seven holes. Then, a mishap on the par-5 eighth left the pair at two-over heading into the turn. Needing to regroup, Rachel took a step away from the course and a step inside to grab one of her favorite candy bars, a Kit-Kat. "If I get my candy bar we will do better," Rachel joked as she described what she told her dad on the way to their outward nine.
With the pair still at two-over through 12 holes, Rachel hit 3-hybrid on the par-5 13th to about 25 yards short of the green. From there, Tommy's putt left the ball about a foot from the hole, leaving Rachel with the easy tap-in birdie. On the next holes, the duo recorded another birdie that brought them back to even-par.
Four teams were in a tie for second. They include: Jon and Madison Isaacson of Greensboro, NC, Hannah and Jeff Craver of Winston Salem, NC, Martin and Emily Stinson of Charlotte, NC, and Makalyn and Frank Poole of Williamston, NC.
