Azallion Wins 9th Anderson Boys' Invitationial

This time last week Daniel Azallion of Hilton Head, S.C. was sitting on the waiting list for the Jimmy Anderson Boys' Invitational just hoping to get the call that there was a spot for him to play.  Azallion, a high school sophomore, got the call Friday afternoon after multiple withdrawals and took advantage of the opportunity winning the 9th edition of the Anderson Boys' with a two day total of four under par 140.  "I was focused on hitting good drives, just picking good targets and giving myself opportunities to make birdies and it worked out today" said Azallion.  Azallion played the George Cobb designed course at Jacksonville Country Club bogey free on Sunday and his last 28 holes of the tournament without a bogey.

First round leader Chris Kim of Cary, N.C. got off to a rocky start Sunday shooting a four over par 40 on first nine holes, but battled back on the back side with a three under 33 to finish with a round of 73 just one shot behind Azallion at 141.  2015 NC Junior Boys' champion Jack Massei of Cary, N.C. finished in third place after rounds of 70 and 72 and finished two shots back at two under par 142.  Reigning NC Junior Boys' 13 and Under Champion Jackson Van Paris of Pinehurst, N.C. finished in fourth place at one under par 143.  Tied for fifth at even par 144 were Austin Bonfiglio of Holly Spring, N.C. and Kevin Burris of Conway, S.C.

This annual junior tournament was started by the alumni of the Jacksonville Country Club junior golf program in 2009 to honor their longtime teacher and friend Mr. Jimmy Anderson.  Jimmy Anderson was the head golf professional at Jacksonville Country Club for over 25 years.  Each Saturday morning, he conducted a junior golf clinic to help spread the game of golf to the next generation.  During his tenure at Jacksonville CC, he taught many juniors including Mallory Miller, the 1987 N.C. Junior Champion and numerous future collegiate and golf professionals.  Not only did he teach the game of golf, but was always there with a helpful word of encouragement to any young golfer.  The tournament began as a boys and girls tournament, but due to the success of the event, the girls have been given their own tournament that is conducted each fall in October.
