Kuehn & Childress Take Dogwood Lead Junior
Faced with hot and humid weather, Michael Childress of Salisbury, N.C. was able to come out firing and shot an impressive round of 68, four-under-par. Even more impressively, he was able to shoot four-under-par on his back nine after shooting even on the front side. This round puts him in the lead after day one of the 12th Dogwood State Junior Championship. “I just wanted to hit the middle of the greens and make a couple of putts here and there. A birdie on the first hole was really nice to take some of the tension out,” Childress stated. “Even though I had a few misses and made a couple bogeys I feel that I stayed in it really well. I caught fire on the back. I made a 12-footer on ten for birdie as well as a couple three-footers on eleven and twelve for birdies then finished birdie, birdie.” Childress went on to say, “I do not feel that I played a whole lot different than I have been, I just feel like I stayed in it a whole lot better and played my shots and played my game.” Going into tomorrow with the lead, Childress “hopes to take each shot as it is like today and to keep playing my game.”
Spencer Oxendine of Fayetteville, N.C. and Fulton Smith of Pinehurst, N.C. were not going to let Childress run away with the tournament this early on into the championship. Both Oxendine and Smith were able to put together strong rounds of 69, three-under-par, putting them in a tie for second. Oxendine stated, “I was hitting the driver everywhere so I only hit it about six times today, which is not a lot for me because it is usually a weapon in my bag during a round. I was hitting a lot of 3-woods off the tee to keep it in play and my short game was really good. Whenever I missed greens I was able to get it up-and-down.” Entering tomorrow only one stroke off the lead, Oxendine’s plan of attack is “to keep the ball in play and keep attacking pins.” Smith stated, “I was hitting it really well off the tee and that’s the key to this course; keeping it in play. I also hit a lot of good iron shots but didn’t capitalize on as many as I should have. Even with new greens, being less than a year old, they were still running smooth.” Going into tomorrow Smith has the same strategy as today, “fairways and greens.”
Rachel Kuehn of Asheville, N.C. came in at the top of the leader board in the girls' division by shooting a strong round of even par, 72. After being tied at one-under-par with Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C. at the turn, Kuehn was able to hold a slight edge over Hawkins during the back nine to take a one-stroke lead going into the second round. There is no doubt that Kuehn will have a lot of strong competition looking to take over the lead to go into the third and final round on August 11th.
