Hawkins Keeps Carolinas Jr Girls' Lead
Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C. maintains a two stroke lead entering the final 18-holes of play
THOMASVILLE, N.C. (July 27, 2016) -- Second round results of the 60th Carolinas Junior Girls' Championship hosted by Colonial Country Club in Thomasville, N.C. on Wednesday, July 27th (Par: 36-35--71, Yards: 5,849, Course Rating: 73.6/131).
First round leader Emily Hawkins will enter Thursday's final round of 60th Carolinas Junior Girls' Championship with a two stroke lead; the same advantage she began play with Wednesday at Colonial Country Club. If Hawkins is able to complete the wire-to-wire win, the Lexington, N.C. native will become just the third player in history to capture both the North Carolina Junior Girls' and Carolinas Junior Girls' titles in the same year. The previous players to do so are Adrienne Millican of Fuquay-Varina, N.C. in 2000 and Eleana Collins of Pinehurst, N.C. in 2006.

The heat index in Thomasville, N.C. again climbed over 100 degrees. Players scores reflected the grueling conditions, with no one able to break par-71.
Hawkins looked like she would improve upon her opening round two-under 69. In her first six holes, she was one-under-par, hitting every green in regulation. Then her approach shots started missing, leading to four consecutive bogeys on holes 7 through 10. "With the way I played today, I am glad to still have the lead," said the 15-year-old Hawkins. Momentum gained with a 5-iron for a tap-in birdie on the par-3 15th was lost to a bogey on the par-3 17th. Despite her three-over 74, Hawkins is encouraged heading into the final round. "I've had the pressure of being in the lead, it should help me hopefully."
Kathleen Sumner of Charleston, S.C. was able to climb from fourth into second place with a two-over 73. Sumner had an up-and-down day, mixing four birdies with two bogeys and two double bogeys. Sumner began Wednesday three strokes behind Hawkins. A promising birdie-birdie start was erased by a double bogey on the par-5 3rd. Another double bogey on No. 16 was answered with a five foot birdie on the par-3 17th. "I can do some dumb things on the golf course," Sumner said while recounting her round. "The thing about when I play golf, I can do something stupid, then bounce back with a birdie. It's an emotional roller coaster." Showing her power off the tee, Sumner reached the 444 yard par-5 10th in two with a 7-iron from 163 yards for a two-putt birdie. She will need more easy birdies like that to erase the two stroke deficit she will face Thursday. With a two-day total of three-over-par 145, Sumner will play in the final group with Hawkins. "I like being in the final group," said the rising high school senior who has committed to playing at Florida State University. "It's nice to know how the other leaders stand."
Rounding out the lead group will be Muskan Uppal of Cornelius, N.C., who is four strokes behind Hawkins at five-over 147. Final round play will begin with a 9:30 shotgun start on Thursday morning. The Carolinas Junior Girls' Championship format is 54 holes of stroke play. The field is flighted after round two based on the player’s 36-hole score. The Championship flight will be made up of the top 18 players and ties. All other flights will consist of 9 players each.
Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has not reached her 19th birthday by July 28, 2016, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)
The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
