Sumner Sweeps 49th Twin States Junior Girls’ Championship

Kathleen Sumner of Charleston, S.C. shot rounds of 69-74 for a two-day total of one-under-par 143 to capture the win at the 49th Twin States Junior Girls’ Championship hosted by Chapel Hill Country Club in Chapel Hill, N.C. Sumner entered today's round with a two-shot lead over Ashley Czarnecki of Greenville, S.C. and Gracyn Burgess of Lexington, S.C. but saw that vanish as Czarnecki and Burgess came out firing. Sumner, a rising high school junior, steadied herself quickly.
“I didn’t start off hitting the ball as well as yesterday but after a few holes it clicked.” Sumner used three birdies on her final nine, including a crucial birdie on the par-5 18th hole to best Burgess by one stroke.
“I was just thinking I really do not want to go into a playoff,” said Sumner about the winning putt. The 49th Twin States is a championship that Sumner will never forget, “this is my first CGA Championship and first major win, it feels awesome.”
The championship was flighted after the first round. Riley Smyth of Cary, N.C. shot a career-low 69 in the second round to finish first in the 1st flight. Kathyrn Carson of Mooresville, N.C. finished second with a total score of 151. Smith Knaffle of Murrels Inlet, SC, Hailey Cleary of Lexington, S.C. and Hailey Freedman of Chapel Hill, N.C. finished tied for third in the flight.
In Flight 2, Annie Collom of Charlotte, N.C. took home first place honors with Anna Chanthaphaeng of Boiling Springs, S.C. taking solo second. Tied for third was Jodee Tindal of Rock Hill, S.C. and Jensen Castle of West Columbia, S.C.
Meghan Symonds of Cary, N.C. finished one shot ahead of Catherine Ashworth of Fuquay-Variana, N.C. to win Flight 3. Samantha Bennett of Wake Forest, N.C. place third in the flight.
Flight 4 saw Muskan Uppal fire a second round 76 to take home the first place trophy. Beth Ann Townsend of Greenville, S.C. finished second in the flight beating Carrie Ganim of Greensboro, N.C. by a single stroke.
Brooke Hutto of Aiken, S.C. finished first in the 5th Flight. Ashley Kim of Chapel Hill, N.C. took home second while Bryson Bowman of Summerfield, N.C. and Anna Moore of Wilmington, N.C. finished tied for third.
