Congratulations to Nic Brown of Wendell, N.C. on taking home the 31st North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship trophy from River Landing's River Course in Wallace, N.C. Brown carded three red scores of 67-69-68 to finish at a three-day total of 204, 12-under to claim his second CGA win.
In Round 1, Brown started his round off hot with three birdies in his first five holes. He made the turn at 1-under, and started the back nine with another birdie on 10. However, his birdies didn’t end there. Brown proceeded to birdie 13, 14, 15, and 16, recording an impressive eight birdies for the day to shoot a 67, 5-under.
After Round 1, Brown, Brandon Grzywacz of Sanford, N.C., and Jacob Golliday of Charlotte, N.C, all shared the lead at 5-under.
Round 2 on Saturday began with light showers and cloudy skies. Brown had a very consistent, steady, bogey-free round on Saturday. He parred his first six holes, followed by a birdie, par, and birdie to finish his first nine at 2-under so far for the day, 7-under total. With another birdie on his 14th hole and eight more pars on his second nine, Brown shot a 69, 3-under to separate himself from the pack and put himself in a strong position going into the Final Round.
Heading into the Final Round on Sunday, Brown had a four-stroke lead at 8-under. Behind him was Jackson Spires of Apex, N.C., and Jacob Johnson of Charlotte, N.C., at 4-under.
When asked what he did well this weekend to put himself in a good place heading into the Final Round, Brown shared, “I drove the ball really well. There’s a good mix of holes out here. You have to hit driver on some, and you have to hit irons on others. I was able to hit a lot of fairways which was really important out here to avoid the rough.”
Sunday was another cloudy, cool day to wrap up the weekend and crown a champion. Brown birdied holes 2, 5, and 7 to get his final 18 holes off to a strong start. He made the turn at 10-under, with Grzywacz three strokes behind at 7-under. Brown went on another birdie streak, with a circle on the scorecard for holes 12, 13, and 15, putting him at 12-under with just a few holes to play. He held a comfortable four-stroke lead over Grzywacz. A big birdie putt on 16 for Brown was met with cheers from the group’s spectators.
Brown shot 4-under, 68 in the Final Round to finish at 12-under for the tournament, securing the win by four strokes.
“I felt really good this weekend. This is my first official mid-amateur event; the mid-ams are always nice and it’s a little more relaxed out here. I just had fun; I’m glad to not be working, and it was fun to play golf instead,” Brown shared about how he felt mentally out on the course the last three days.
Brown won the Carolinas Amateur Championship in 2022, making this his second CGA win. “River Landing is awesome, I played here a bunch growing up, so it felt great to be back and to play well.”
Grzywacz finished in second place at 8-under, and Spires finished in third place at 5-under.
