DeGroodt and Clancy Victorious at Mixed Teams Championship

BEAUFORT, S.C. - The duo of Victoria DeGroodt and Ryan Clancy of Blufton, S.C., came into today’s final round of the 19th Carolinas Mixed Team Championship tied for the lead. At the end of the day, they left Cat Island Club with their first CGA titles and a memorable experience as Championship Division winners.

 

“We’ve played together for the last 12 years including playing together at the University of South Carolina Beaufort,” DeGroodt said.

 

“Today’s round could be summed in two words, DING and DONG!,” laughed Clancy. “It’s a difficult format, relying on someone else to put you in the right spot and also not hurting them either; it’s difficult mentally,” said Clancy. “It’s draining, but the outcome was good,” added DeGroodt.

 

The pair recorded rounds of 67 and 69 for a six-under, good for a three-shot lead over Joseph Cansler and Reece Hart of Clemmons, N.C., and Winston-Salem, N.C., and Andrew Flaskerud and Katie Flaskerud of Charlotte, N.C.

 

“A lot of putts were made today, for sure,” mentioned DeGroodt. “Holes 9 and 10 were really good, and we both focused on our strengths down the stretch,” added Clancy.

 

Teams are comprised of a male amateur golfer and a female amateur golfer. There was a Championship Division, Tournament Division (shorter course), Senior Division (ages 55+ for males, ages 50+ for females), and a Super Senior Division (ages 65+ for males and females). Teams can choose to compete in any division in which they are eligible. Round 1 on Saturday was Four-Ball Stroke Play, and Round 2 on Sunday saw Modified Alternate Shot Stroke Play.

 

The Championship Men’s Division played the black tees (6,478 yards), the Tournament, Senior, and Super Senior Men’s Divisions, and the Championship Women’s Division played the yellow tees (5,893 yards). The Tournament, Senior, and Super Senior Women’s Division played the red tees (4,676 yards) (35-36--71).

   

Lea Anne Brown and Mark Hoover of Mount Pleasant, S.C., took home the Senior Division Championship with solid 72 and 75 rounds to finish at 5-over. Behind them in second was Charlie Hall and Niza Hall of Hilton Head Island, S.C., two strokes back at 7-over.

 

Richard Chapman and Barbara Sauter of Southport, N.C., won the Super Senior Division with a 6-over on back-to-back rounds of 74. The pair finished tied with Jerry Sennett and Karen Sennett of Stanley, N.C. but would secure the title on the second playoff hole as rain moved into the area.

 

Pam Prescott and  David League of Piedmont, S.C., and Travelers Rest, S.C., clinched the Tournament Division on the strength of a 67 and 72 for a 3-under finish. In second place was the team of Sofia Victoria Lindstrom and Jeff Rich of Greensboro, N.C.
