MERRY HILL, N.C. - For the first time since 2020, Team Virginias takes down Team Carolinas at the Junior Boys’ Team Matches hosted by Occano.

Virginias set the tone during the first round, winning three four-ball matches which established an early three-point lead in their favor. Team Carolinas earned .5 points in the opening match from Ethan Boyette of Wilson, N.C. and Will Guidry of Winterville, N.C. as they finished in a tie against Ryan Leach of Williamsburg, VA, and Jake Albert of Blacksburg, VA.

Team Virginias took that momentum into the afternoon round, which featured foursome matches. Team Carolinas won just one match in this format, coming from Jonathon Jones of Denver, N.C. and Bennett Scaletta of Belton, S.C. Virginias was victorious in the three other matches, extending their lead to 6.5-1.5 after Day 1.

Inclement weather was an uncertainty for the entirety of the tournament, and play was interrupted by excessive rain and lightning during the middle of the foursome matches. Play resumed a couple hours later as the sky cleared up, and each hole was modified to a par-3 due to unplayable fairways.

Team Carolinas had a lot of ground to cover headed into Day 2 in order to overcome the five-point deficit from the Virginias. The final format was singles match-play to close out the event, featuring eight extremely competitive matchups.

Scaletta won his second match of the tournament after defeating Talon Dingledine of Richmond, VA. Boyette also came out victorious in his match against Trey Marrion of Chesapeake, VA. Boyette closed the door with a tap-in for birdie on Hole 17, after coming inches away from a hole-in-one on the par-3. Teddy Dunn of Blythewood, S.C. and Drew Yeagley of Waxhaw, N.C. both tied their matches, earning .5 points respectively.

The lead was too large to come back for Team Carolinas, as Team Virginias won five out of the eight singles matches, and coasted to their first win in four years with a 11.5-4.5 victory. Carolinas still leads the all-time series 23-17-2.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank the staff at Occano, especially Head Golf Professional Chad Beach and Superintendent Keith Little for hosting the 42nd Carolinas-Virginias Junior Boys’ Team Matches.
