After three rounds of four-ball stroke play at High Point Country Club’s Willow Creek Course, Scott Newton of Wallburg, N.C. and Joseph Cansler of Clemmons, N.C. went wire-to-wire to win the North Carolina Four-Ball Championship with rounds of 63-64-65, 24-under-par overall.
Newton and Cansler are ideal four-ball partners. Newton is the definition of consistent and can be counted on to card par all day long while Cansler is, as Newton put it, streaky. Once Cansler heats up, there is no cooling him down. A prime example is their round on Friday, in which the UNC Greensboro alumni shot 5-under on his own ball… just on the back nine.
“I am not going to make many bogeys at all. My strength is getting pars and once he (Cansler) makes one or two birdies, the floodgates just open and he just goes to town. Another strength of mine is picking good partners,” Newton said with a laugh. Cansler followed with, “It is great playing when you know your partner already has you at par. Don’t let him (Newton) sell himself short, he made a lot of birdies out there as well. It was a great time.”
Coming into the final round the side had a two stroke lead over the defending champions, Andy Knox of Apex, N.C. and Mark McMillen of Holly Springs, N.C. as well as Tim Driver and Daniel McBrien of Holly Springs, N.C.
“We figured if we came out and played well with the lead we already had, the chances that somebody would catch us were kind of slim,” said Cansler.
The duo did exactly that. Newton and Cansler came out strong, just as they had for the previous two rounds with birdies on Nos. 2, 4, 6, and 7. They maintained at least a two stroke lead for the entirety of the front nine and planned to play it safe on the back nine after yet another birdie on No. 10 to avoid risking the lead they already held. However, that plan nearly backfired as others started to heat up.
“We looked at the leaderboard on No. 14 after I made about a 15-footer for birdie on No. 12 and he (Cansler) made one on No. 13. We realized we were five up and decided to just play smart and par on the way in. Then the group with us (Driver and McBrien) got hot and birdied Nos. 13, 15, 16 and 17 and almost caught us.”
14-year-old, Daniel McBrien, and past CGA Champion, Tim Driver, were just one shot off the lead after the opening round and two back heading into the final round. With rounds of 64-65-65 they were certainly a force to be reckoned with.
Driver and McBrien got off to a slow start, relative to their position on the leaderboard, in the final round making the turn at 3-under. However any missed opportunities they had on the front nine they certainly made up for on the back nine. They birdied Nos. 10, 13, 15, 16 and 17 and nearly caught the eventual champions, but fell just two strokes shy earning runner-up at 22-under-par, 194.
Cansler and Newton claimed the 27th North Carolina Four-Ball Championship with a par from Newton on No. 18. This marked Newton’s fourth CGA Championship win and Cansler’s first title.
The newly-minted champion remarked, “I have been playing in the CGA for years now and it is always so much fun, but it is such a nice feeling to be a champion in one.” Newton added, “It is an honor to be able to play in these and it is just beyond great to come back and win it.”
Ultimately, reigning U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Champion Davis Womble of Winston-Salem, N.C. and reigning N.C. Mid-Amateur Champion Dan Walters of Winston-Salem, N.C. earned third at 21-under-par, 195. They had both one of the biggest comebacks and the lowest round of the week. Womble and Walters carded 2-under-par, 70 in the opening round which put them seven shots off the lead. However with a second round of 9-under-par, 63 and the low round of the week in the final round, 10-under-par, 62, they finished just three strokes shy of the lead. The 2021 North Carolina Four-Ball Champions, Knox and McMillen finished in fourth at 18-under-par, 198.
The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank the members and staff at High Point Country Club for graciously hosting the 27th North Carolina Four-Ball Championship.
