Steve Harwell of Mooresville, N.C. captured the 61st Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship at Rock Barn Country Club with an incredible 7-under-par, 65 in the second round highlighting his impressive run this week. He claimed his fifth CGA Championship title at 6-under-par, 210.
Harwell made par for the first 24 holes of the championship. With Larry Cloninger of Gastonia, N.C. and Gary Robinson of Fayetteville, N.C. already at 4-under-par by that point, he knew it was time to kick it into high gear.
“I was wondering if I was ever going to make a birdie,” said Harwell. “Then I hit a hybrid to about five feet on No. 7 [in the second round] and I made it for eagle. After that, I just about holed out a wedge on the next hole so that got me jump started.”
From No. 7 on, Harwell drained five birdies to make a momentous climb to the top of the leaderboard heading into the final round. His 7-under-par, 65 in the second round was the lowest round of the week by three strokes.
The 2019 Carolinas Senior Amateur Champion led the field by one stroke at 7-under-par at the start of day three. His game plan for the final round was simple: Just keep swinging.
Harwell got off to a rocky start with his first bogey of the championship on No. 2 with another soon to follow on No. 6. In the meantime, Cloninger strung together a run of pars to take back the lead that he held after the opening round.
“I had two bad iron shots on Nos. 2 and 6 and I couldn’t get up and down. But then finally I hit another hybrid in on No. 7 to about six or seven feet and made it again. That really settled me down,” remarked Harwell.
The 2019 Carolinas Senior Men’s Player of the Year stumbled through the turn with bogeys on Nos. 9, 10 and 13, which gave Cloninger the window of opportunity he was looking for. Cloninger continued his string of pars and was able to take a two stroke lead through No. 13, but Harwell was far from giving up.
On the 540-yard, par-5 No. 14, Harwell made his first move with a clutch birdie. He followed it with yet another birdie on the par-3, No. 15 to swiftly take back his lead. This was now a lead he would not let go of for the remainder of the round. He cruised in with three more pars to capture his fifth CGA Championship title at 6-under-par, 210.
“It is always great to win one,” said the two-time Carolinas Senior Amateur Champion. “You never know when your last one is going to be so you really savor them more as you get older. It is very nice to win and I am extremely happy.”
Ultimately, Cloninger earned runner-up at 5-under-par, 211. He led the rest of the pack by four strokes and was one of only two players to card two rounds under par this week. Robinson tied for third with Duff Wagner of Taylors, S.C. at 1-under-par, 215.
The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank the members and staff at Rock Barn Country Club, especially Head Golf Professional Marshal Robinson and Golf Course Superintendent Jon Robertson, for graciously hosting the 61st Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship.
