Round of 32 Results:
Match play is notorious for bringing out the competitive edge in a player and there was high level competition played today. The Round of 32 saw six upsets, three matches end in extra holes, two returning champions move on to the Round of 16 and the No. 32 seed take down the medalist.
Daniel Neveu of Pinehurst, N.C. defeated Kenan Poole of Raleigh, N.C. in 20 holes of intense match play. There were seven holes that were won with birdies throughout the day and a birdie on the 20th hole (No. 2), secured Neveu’s seat in the Round of 16.
The second seed, Davis Womble of Winston-Salem, N.C. won with the largest margin of the day, 6 & 4, against the 31st seed Scott Park of Charlotte, N.C. Womble won six of the 14 holes with birdies.
Tyler DeChellis of Clayton, N.C. and Thomas Bonney of Greensboro, N.C. played the longest match of the day, which went into an interminable 24 holes. DeChellis was the eventual champion of that match and squared up to Connor Armistead of Charlotte, N.C. in the Round of 16.
The defending champion, Nicholas Mathews of Mebane, N.C. secured his first win in match play 3 & 2 against Graham Chase of Charlotte, N.C. He faced off against Randall Hudson of New Bern, N.C. in the Round of 16 for a seat in the Quarterfinals tomorrow.
The Round of 16 began immediately after the Round of 32. Results of the Round of 16 are as follows below.
Round of 16 Results:
Daniel Neveu has beat the odds and done it again. After defeating Ryan Blair of Charlotte, N.C. 2 & 1, the No. 32 seed will be going into the Quarterfinals tomorrow. Neveu’s mindset, since the playoff for match play to the start of the Quarterfinals, is that of many seasoned golfers, “I just don’t try to beat myself up.”
“I try to hit it in the middle of the green,” said Neveu. “The greens are so fast and they are hard to read. I figured if I can just get it on the green then somebody is going to have to hit it really close to make putts, because it seems like nobody is making putts out here including me. As long as I can stay in the game then I think I have a chance.”
Neveu will face off against Cyrus Stewart of Raleigh, N.C. in the Quarterfinals. Stewart is the No. 25 seed and pulled off two upsets thus far defeating the No. 8 seed 3 & 2 in the Round of 32 and the No. 9 seed 2 & 1 on his route to the weekend.
Davis Womble is now the lowest seed remaining in the field and has yet to play Nos. 16, 17 or 18 since the start of match play. He won his Round of 16 match 4 & 3 against Brett Barry of Winston-Salem, N.C. and will play Bryson Boyette of Wilson, N.C. in the Quarterfinals.
Randall Hudson of New Bern, N.C. defeated the defending champion Nicholas Mathews of Mebane, N.C. in an exciting 3 & 1 finish. Hudson and Mathews played incredible golf with matching birdies tying three holes throughout their match. A final birdie from Hudson on No. 17 secured his seat in the Quarterfinals.
Hudson will play the 2019 champion Ben Woodruff of Huntersville, N.C. in the Quarterfinals. Woodruff is the only returning champion remaining in the field after two swift 4 & 3 finishes today in the Round of 32 and Round of 16.
The Quarterfinals begin tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. with starting times until 8:30 a.m. The Semifinals matches will follow at 12:15 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. Stay tuned to our Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for live coverage of the 12th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship.
