Taylor Takes The Lead At The Carolinas Amateur

 

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (July 9, 2021) -- Second round results of the 107th Carolinas Amateur Championship at Biltmore Forest Country Club in Asheville, N.C. on July 9, 2021. The field is competing at 6,648 yards (par 35-35--70).

After a rainy start during Friday’s second round, Blake Taylor of Atkinson, N.C. is at the top of the leaderboard, carding a 4-under-par, 66 for a two-day score of 9-under-par, 131. The East Carolina University alum put his calm disposition and nerves of steel on display throughout the entirety of the day. “I was in a pretty bad spot on No. 7, so I kind of accepted that I’m gonna make bogey, and get it back later.” Taylor did get his game right back on the mark, making birdies on Nos. 8 and 9. 

 

Taylor carried that momentum through the middle stretch of his second round after he and his playing partners Austin Bonfiglio of Holly Springs, N.C., Christian Park of Charlotte, N.C. and Davis Womble of Winston-Salem, N.C. returned from the rain delay. “When you hit No. 7, there’s a big stretch of birdie holes. Nos. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, are all very get-able,” said Taylor. “And actually, Davis birdied all of them. I was just trying to make them when I could. Overall I putted well.”

 

After just missing a birdie on No. 14, Taylor hit his ball left into the trees and was forced to punch-out. Carefully judging the layout of the hole, Taylor punched out from under the trees and rolled his ball to a foot from the hole. On his round today, Taylor expressed that while he played well, there is always room for improvement. “Overall my round was solid, but it’s nice for me because I know that there’s still things I can improve on.” 

 

Rather than feeling nervous about the pressure of his position going into Saturday’s round, Taylor embraced the positive side of things. “Honestly, it’s nice,” said Taylor. “I haven’t been in this position in a while, so I’ll be able to look back on those previous times that I was leading, and play my game, the game that got me to this point. But it will be nice to feel that pressure this weekend.”

 

Heading into Saturday’s round in second position is Addison Beam of Cherryville, N.C. who fired off the low round of the day, a 6-under-par, 64. He tied his career low today and summed up his round in a few words, “made a lot of good putts, not a lot of good shots.”

 

In the day prior, Beam had shot a solid, even-par, 70, and he used his Round 1 to additionally strategize and improve on his round today.  “I was a little more careful on the back (nine) because I noticed that a lot of people yesterday played well on the front and on the back kind of fell apart,” said the rising junior on the Appalachian State men’s golf team. “So I wanted to make sure I kept it together on the back.” 

 

Davis Womble carded an outstanding 4-under-par, 66 today to tie for third with Austin Bonfiglio entering the third round. “I gave myself a lot more opportunities today,” remarked Womble. “I wasn’t scrambling as much, and I continued to drive it well.” In addition to more aggressive tactics, Womble’s putter was on fire. He made six birdies in a row and remarked, “I made them when I had the chance. The key is just to keep the putter hot.” 

 

The 2020 Carolinas Mid-Amateur Champion, Cyrus Stewart of Raleigh, N.C. holds fifth position after carding a 1-under-par, 69 in the second round for a two-day total of 3-under-par, 137. The Biltmore Forest township holds a special place in Stewart’s heart as it is where his late grandfather grew up. “My grandfather grew up in the Biltmore Forest area, he worked as a milk delivery boy and delivered to these houses around here,” said Stewart. “Coming here, it’s very special. He introduced me to the game. I miss him very much and I know my mom does. I could feel his presence with me today.” 

 

Two incredible shots of the day belonged to Stewart and John Peters of Okatie, S.C. Stewart holed out for an eagle from 130 yards on No. 18. Spectators watching on No. 18 and the adjacent holes cheered as Stewart jumped excitedly in the fairway and clicked his heels together. Peters drained a hole-in-one on the par-4, 14 from 298 yards. That was his first hole-in-one and the first of the competition this week. 

 

The cut line fell at 7-over-par, 147 overall and 66 players made it to the weekend. The third round will begin tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. with starting times until 10:45 a.m. off of No. 1. About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.

The CGA annually conducts 48 championships and five team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. The CGF has distributed nearly $2,000,000 since 1977 to benefit Carolinas' golf initiatives including junior and women's programs.
