After an action-packed first round, and dodging the remnants of Hurricane Elsa, Austin Bonfiglio of Holly Springs, N.C. sits atop the leaderboard with a 6-under-par, 64. The rising senior on the UNC Wilmington men’s golf team kept a pristine scorecard with six birdies and 12 pars.
Bonfiglio, having played Biltmore Forest Country Club only once, the practice round for this championship, stuck to his game and enjoyed a nice day out on the course. “The course is in unbelievable shape, the maintenance crew and everyone at the club did a fantastic job getting it ready for the tournament. The course made a good test of golf. It was a lot of fun.” Bonfiglio said.
Bonfiglio made some clutch plays around and on the greens, making a long putt on No. 2, and chipping in on No. 5 to get his first round started. “The back nine I started to spray my shots a little bit, but I got lots of up and downs,” Bonfiglio said.
When asked what he would do differently the next round, Bonfiglio replied, “probably be a little less stressful with the driver. Try to keep it a little more in play from the fairway, and hit a few more greens on the back nine.”
Trailing Bonfiglio by one stroke is Blake Taylor of Atkinson, N.C. with a 5-under-par, 65. Taylor and Bonfiglio were paired together in the first round and fed off each other’s energy. “We were both hitting good shots, we were both rolling the ball well on the greens,” said Taylor.
Taylor’s key aspect of his game was his ball striking. “My irons were good and out of the rough I was judging flyers or non-flyers pretty well, so that was a lot of help. Hitting a lot of greens and making easy pars.” In addition to his easy pars, Taylor gave himself plenty of birdie looks as well, carding seven birdies for his first round.
In third position is Andrew Graham of Asheville, N.C., a member at the Biltmore Forest Country Club and an incoming freshman at UNC Greensboro. Graham carded a 4-under-par, 66 for the day. “My caddie kept me in it today, I stayed patient. Rolled a lot of putts today, short game was there big time,” said Graham. In addition to an excellent show of short game, the Asheville native eagled No. 11. “I ended up carrying the bunker and it got a huge bounce,” said Graham. “Hit it about 10 feet to the hole and rolled it in.”
Sitting in solo fourth after round one was the 2019 Carolinas Mid-Amateur champion Stephen Woodard of Charlotte, N.C. with a 5-under-par, 65. Tied for fifth is UNC Charlotte’s Matthew Sharpstene of Charlotte, N.C. and the 2020 Carolinas Mid-Amateur champion Cyrus Stewart of Raleigh, N.C.
The second round will begin tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. with starting times until 2:58 p.m. off of No. 1. Stay tuned to our Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for live coverage of the second round of the 107th Carolinas Amateur Championship.
