Pine Island Country Club proved to be challenging per usual, but with up to 20 mile per hour winds, the course put the field to the test for the final round of the 16th Vicki DiSantis Junior Girls’ Championship. Despite tough conditions, Emily Mathews of Mebane, N.C. was able to hold her lead from the opening round and captured the title at 2-under-par, 142 overall.

Coming into the day, Mathews’ main goal was to manage her expectations and focus on one shot at a time. With Elizabeth Rudisill of Charlotte, N.C. and Mary Kathryn Talledo of Spartanburg, S.C. close behind her after the opening round, she wanted to control her game and block out what her opponents were shooting.

Mathews started the round with a bogey on No. 1, but she was able to gain momentum from several clutch par saves, including her play of the day when she holed out on No. 4 from the bottom of a hill 30 yards away. Immediately following the shot she remarked, “you’ve gotta get lucky sometimes.” However, her birdie on No. 7 was far from luck and it fueled her fire to finish the front nine at 1-over-par, 36.

Rudisill also birdied No. 7 and with two more birdies on Nos. 10 and 14, she found herself tied for the lead on the 16th tee. With matching pars on No. 16, the 17th hole became pivotal in determining the next Vicki DiSantis Champion.

Rudisill carded a bogey on the par-3 No. 17 and Mathews sank a clutch par putt to take back her lead. She retained her one-stroke lead through the 18th green and graciously won the 16th Vicki DiSantis Junior Girls’ Championship. Rudisill earned runner-up with a 1-under-par, 143 finish.

The newly minted champion said, “It means a lot to me. It is an honor to win this tournament especially going into recruiting. It really means a lot to me and my family.” This is Mathews’ second CGA championship title. She is the reigning Dogwood State Junior Girls’ Champion and she will try to defend her title at Kinston Country Club in July.

Third place was claimed by a three-way-tie at 2-over-par, 146 overall. The 2020 North Carolina Junior Girls’ Player of the Year Kiera Bartholomew of Wake Forest, N.C. tied with Mary Kathryn Talledo of Spartanburg, S.C. and Ella Perna of Durham, N.C.

The CGA would like to extend a thank you to the members and staff of Pine Island Country Club, especially Head Professional Joey Schneider and Course Superintendents Scott Cato and Daniel Anderson, for their hospitality in hosting the 16th Vicki DiSantis Junior Girls’ Championship. We are thankful for their support in hosting this event for the last 15 years.
