The battle for medalist ended in a three-way-tie and the battle to qualify for match play ended with nine sides in a playoff for the No. 32 seed. The nerves were high and the scores were low.
Cameron Akers of Asheville, N.C. and Zachary Reuland of Rock Hill, S.C., Chris Cassetta of High Point, N.C. and Steven Brame of Henderson, N.C., and McClure Thompson of Hartsville, S.C. and Mitchell Vance of Little River, S.C. tied for the lead at 11-under-par, 129 overall.
All three sides earned medalist honors, but their seeding was determined by random selection. Akers and Reuland are the No. 1 seed entering the Round of 32 tomorrow. Cassetta and Brame are the second seed and Thompson and Vance are the No. 3 seed.
Chad Wilfong of Charlotte, N.C. and Davis Womble of Winston-Salem, N.C. finished one stroke shy of the lead at 10-under-par, 130 total. The duo fired off 5-under-par, 65 for the past two rounds to earn the fourth seed.
Daniel McBrien and Garrett Risner of Holly Springs, N.C. tied for fifth position with Dermot McElhennon of Wake Forest, N.C. and Jackson Sides of Chapel Hill, N.C. after a 9-under-par, 131 overall finish. McElhennon and Sides won the fifth seed in the random selection and McBrien and Risner took the sixth seed.
The final seed in the bracket was determined by a nine side playoff for those tied at 1-under-par, 139 total. The playoff lasted three holes until Christian Bailey of Matthews, N.C. holed out for birdie to secure him and his partner Travon Willis of Indian Trail, S.C. the final seed in the bracket. They will face off against Reuland and Akers at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow.
The field has been cut to the low 32 scores for match play. The Round of 32 will begin tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. with the Round of 16 starting immediately after the Round of 32 is finished. Stay tuned to our Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for live coverage.
