After Tropical Storm Zeta and an additional inch of rain this morning, the Country Club of Salisbury had several unplayable holes, forcing the final round of the 40th Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship to be canceled. Since the first and second rounds were completed, the championship was converted to a 36-hole event and we were still able to name a 40th Carolinas Mid-Amateur Champion this morning.
Cyrus Stewart of Raleigh, N.C. captured his first CGA Championship title after a 12-under-par, 130 overall finish. Stewart shot 1-under-par, 70 in his opening round, but catapulted himself atop the leaderboard after an 11-under-par, 60 in the second round yesterday.
“I told myself this past month that I didn’t want to come here and finish 20th or 25th. I wanted to compete,” said Stewart. “So I think the small work that I got to put in with all of the work that I had to put in at the office really paid off.”
The newly minted CGA champion mentioned that a club he often plays has similar features and that he capitalized on that this weekend. “This course reminds me a lot of Raleigh Country Club,” said the former Wake Forest golfer. “The greens are bent and they rolled so true so I took advantage of that yesterday.”
Stewart played professional golf after college and recently regained his amateur status. This is one of his first amateur events since getting his status back and he is quite happy with the outcome.
“It feels good to be back on the amateur circuit finally and get a win,” he said. “It’s obviously not the way that I wanted to win, I was looking forward to playing with Coach Dan (Walters) today, but it’s a good win.”
The first round leader, Matthew Younts of Greensboro, N.C. finished as the runner-up at 5-under-par, 137 overall. Stewart’s former coach at Wake Forest, Dan Walters of Winston-Salem, N.C. took solo third at 3-under-par, 139 total.
Kyle Milner of Spartanburg, S.C. captured the 40+ Division title after an even-par, 142 two day total. Milner was surprised and happy to hear that he would be taking home the title.
“Honestly I didn’t know that there was a 40+ division, but anytime you win it’s nice,” said Milner. “I’ve played really well all year and this golf course really fits my eye. Thanks to the CGA and the Country Club of Salisbury for having us.”
The CGA would like to extend a thank you to the members and staff of Country Club of Salisbury especially Head Professional Chad Campbell, General Manager Frank O’Hara and Head Superintendent Gerry Moore for their hospitality in hosting the 40th Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship. We would also like to thank the players and spectators for their understanding and adherence to our COVID-19 tournament protocols.
