James Mishoe of Cary, N.C. and Louis Lambert of Charlotte, N.C. are leading the North Carolina Four-Ball after carding 9-under-par, 62 in the second round. The side is leading by one stroke entering the final round at an exceptional 17-under-par, 126 total.
Mishoe and Lambert played a great round at Forest Oaks Country Club yesterday finishing at 8-under-par, 64. Notably, Mishoe shot 8-under-par, 64 on his own ball. However their most impressive feat was tying the low round of the tournament at The Cardinal today of 9-under-par, 62.
The side started off strong with both Mishoe and Lambert birdieing No. 10 (they started their round on No. 10). They kept that energy through their front nine, birdieing 13, 16 and 17 as well. While making the turn at 4-under-par was key to their round, their back nine is what made the second round so remarkable.
“We had a big run on our back nine,” said Mishoe. “He (Lambert) birdied the first and second holes. Then I birdied the fourth. We had a big up and down on the fifth hole that kept up the momentum. Then we birdied Nos. 6, 7 and 8.”
The Guilford College teammates are ready to take on The Cardinal again tomorrow going “pedal to the metal” with aggressive play trying to stay ahead of the other teams that Mishoe mentioned will continue to go deep.
2019 runners-up, Dan Walters and Davis Womble of Winston-Salem, N.C. are in second position heading into the final round after a 7-under-par, 65 at Forest Oaks Country Club today.
Womble and Walters come into every four-ball round together with a simple game plan; play aggressive and make birdies. However the complicated aspect of their plan is achieving just that.
“I think we just both stay in the hole about 90 percent of the time. That really gives us two shots at birdie on most holes,” said Womble. “We’re not concerned about making bogey, we still haven’t made a bogey yet. Dan has made a couple of big par putts to keep that streak alive. That is the key, just getting both players in the hole as many times as possible.”
As Womble said, they have played two bogey-free rounds in a row and they intend to play another tomorrow at The Cardinal. Last year, Womble and Walters went into the final round on top, but reigning champions Wilkinson and Howell shot 9-under on the day to beat them by just one stroke. This year Womble and Walters are preparing for a different outcome.
“We were in a very similar spot last year and the guys came out and played some unbelievable golf. I think they were low by five on the last day and we got clipped by a shot,” said Walters. “We just have to keep playing and put the pedal down to win this year.”
Round one leaders, Matthew Younts of Raleigh, N.C. and Nate Cook of Greensboro, N.C. hold solo third after a 5-under-par, 66 at The Cardinal today. Sitting at 15-under-par, 128 overall, Younts and Cook are still well within striking distance of the lead heading into the final round.
Carolinas Four-Ball Champions, Ben Woodruff of Canton, N.C. and Carson Ownbey of Huntersville, N.C. are in a three-way tie for fourth position with Stephen Carroll and Walker Cress of Concord, N.C. as well as C.J. Deberg and Will Dull of Charlotte, N.C.. All three sides finished their second round at 13-under-par, 130 overall.
The field was cut to 6-under-par, 137 total for the final round. 41 teams will play in the final round tomorrow at The Cardinal by Pete Dye. Starting times begin at 8:00 a.m. and the leaders and final group will tee off at 9:50 a.m.
