Alexander Takes Down No. 1 Seed at NC Junior Boys'

Round 1 of Match Play

 

The first round of match play at the 53rd North Carolina Junior Boys’ Championship gave us 32 exciting matchups including 13 that resulted in upsets, four that needed more than 18 holes to decide the outcome and two that stretched as far as 23 holes of golf.

 

Three of those 13 stood out even more as single-digit seeded players were sent home early. Davis Spradling of Clayton, N.C. defeated the No. 6 seed Caleb Surratt of Indian Trail, N.C. 1 up for the biggest upset of the first round. Garrett Risner of Holly Springs, N.C. also took down a single-digit seed as he defeated seventh-seeded Drew Greene of Greenville, N.C. 3 and 1, while Benjamin Hays of Cary, N.C. beat No. 8 seed Ryan Macri of Wake Forest, N.C. 2 and 1.

 

All three of the players who pulled off major upsets had to earn their way into the field for match play by advancing out of a 20 for 13 playoff yesterday afternoon.

 

Each of the three stroke play medalists, Landon Barnes of Pilot Mountain, N.C., Jake Herring of Wilson, N.C. and Colin Dutton of Foxfire, N.C., advanced to Round 2 of match play with victories in their opening match.

 

Round 2 of Match Play

 

Austin Alexander of Rutherfordton, N.C. also pulled off an upset on Wednesday, knocking off top-seeded Landon Barnes of Pilot Mountain, N.C. with a birdie on the 19th hole of the match.

 

Alexander and Barnes both had opportunities to take the lead in the match on the last two holes, however missed their birdie putts. On the extra hole, Alexander nearly sent his tee shot out of bounds, but made a great recovery and put his second shot within 10 feet of the flag. After Barnes missed his putt and made par, Alexander knew what he had to do to win the match.

 

“I was quite nervous,” Alexander said about his feelings on the final green. “You know, he had been making putts all day and once he was over that putt on No. 19, I thought he was going to sink it and put the pressure on me. Finally, he missed one and lipped it out. (His putt) gave me the perfect read, and I took advantage and just sunk it. I honestly couldn't believe it, I had the fist pump ready and everything. I felt great.”

 

Alexander lost in last year’s North Carolina Junior Boys’ Championship to the No. 1 seed and eventual champion, and said that he was determined to not to let the outcome be the same today. Alexander defeated Jonathan Honeywell of Whispering Pines, N.C. in Round 1 of the match play this morning, and will take on Zach Roberts of Holly Springs, N.C. in Round 3 tomorrow.

 

“Tomorrow I am just going to take it to 'em again,” Alexander said. “I will take whatever the golf course gives to me and be aggressive. That is what it takes to win these matches and I am going to do whatever it takes to win.”
