Preview: 94th Carolinas Women's Amateur

 

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (May 29, 2020) -- The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct the 94th Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship at Bermuda Run Country Club in Advance, N.C. from June 2 - 4, 2020. Championship Division (6,219 yards, par 36-36--72) Carolinas Division (5,125 yards, par 36-36--72)

Players to watch:

• Jessica Spicer of Bahama, N.C. is the defending champion in this event and is currently ranked No. 3 in the Carolinas Women’s Rankings. Spicer recently graduated from Virginia Tech. Spicer was a quarterfinalist at the 2019 Carolinas Women’s Match Play Championship and tied for second at the 2019 North Carolina Women’s Amateur. Spicer is hoping to defend her title this year.

• Gina Kim of Chapel Hill, N.C. is the current Carolinas Women’s Player of the Year after winning the NCAA National Championship with the Duke Blue Devils as a freshman. Just one week later, Kim placed 12th in the U.S. Women’s Open and earned low amateur honors. Kim was selected to be a member of the U.S. Arnold Palmer Cup Team and is ranked No. 1 in the Carolinas Women’s Amateur Rankings. 

• Rachel Kuehn of Asheville, N.C. is our 2017 Carolinas Women’s Amateur Champion. Kuehn just wrapped up her freshman year at Wake Forest University and took home her first collegiate championship at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate with her season best score of 13-under, 203. She was named a member of the WGCA All-American First Team and selected to the U.S. Arnold Palmer Cup Team.

• Nicole Adam of Pinehurst, N.C. is ranked the No. 1 golfer in the Carolinas Junior Girls’ Rankings and will start her career as a North Carolina Tar Heel later this fall. Adams won the PKBGT Open Championship in her last outing and has finished in the top-10 in each of her last five appearances. She is the reigning Carolinas Junior Girls’ Player of the Year and N.C. Junior Girls’ Player of the Year. 

• Victoria Huskey of Greenville, S.C. is the defending Carolinas Women’s Match Play champion. Huskey recently graduated from the College of Charleston, finishing as a two-time member of the All-CAA First Team in 2018 and 2019, and as the 2019 Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Golfer of the Year.

• Kathryn Carson of Mooresville, N.C. is the defending North Carolina Women’s Amateur Champion. Carson is a rising senior at East Carolina University. While at ECU, Carson was named American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and earned All-American Athletic Conference honors as a sophomore.

• Katie Kirk of Charlotte, N.C. is a two-time champion at the Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship, taking home the title in both 2014 and 2015. She finished fifth in the event last year. Kirk played college golf at East Carolina University and is currently ranked No. 16 player in the Carolinas Women’s Player Rankings.

Bermuda Run Country Club offers 36 holes designed by famed architects Ellis and Dan Maples. The championship will be played for the first time at Bermuda Run Country Club’s East course.

The championship format is 54 holes of stroke play competition.

 

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 13th birthday by June 2, 2020, maintains a residence in North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
