Preview: Mid-Atlantic Junior Girls' Challenge Matches

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (August 9, 2019) -- The Carolinas Golf Association in association with the Virginia State Golf Association and the Maryland State Golf Association will conduct the 18th Mid-Atlantic Junior Girls’ Challenge Matches at Brook Valley Country Club in Greenville, N.C. from August 10-11, 2019. (6,072 yards; Par 36-36—72; 76.3/139)

The Carolinas Team retained the cup in 2018 after a tied finish, notching the third straight victory in the Mid-Atlantic Junior Girls’ Challenge Matches. The Carolinas Team needs 6 points to retain the cup and the Virginia/Maryland team needs 6.5 points to take home the trophy. The overall tournament record is Carolinas 11, Virginia/Maryland 4.
Carolinas Team Roster:
- Maria Atwood of Holly Springs, N.C. is a member of the 2022 graduating class and returns to the Carolinas Team for her second year. She is currently ranked 13th in the Carolinas Junior Girls’ Rankings and ranked 7th among junior girls in North Carolina. Atwood was the runner-up at the North Carolina Junior Girls’ Championship and finished T3 at the CGA Twin States Junior Girls’ Championship. She was also the 2018 Carolinas Junior Girls’ champion.
- Emily Dunlap of Greenville, S.C. is ranked fourth in the Carolinas Junior Girls’ Rankings and is the 3rd ranked junior girl in South Carolina. Dunlap recently finished T6 in the North and South Junior Girls’ Championship and was the 2018 South Carolina Junior Match Play champion. Dunlap is an incoming freshman at the College of Charleston.
- Mallory Fobes of East Bend, N.C. is ranked 30th in the Carolinas Junior Girls’ rankings and is the 12th ranked junior girl in North Carolina. She recently qualified for the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship and won the CGA Dogwood State Junior Girls’ Championship. Fobes is a incoming freshman at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.
- Chloe Holder of Williamston, S.C. is a member of the 2021 graduating class. Holder is ranked 19th in the Carolinas Junior Girls’ Rankings and is the 12th ranked junior girl in South Carolina. Holder won the South Carolina Junior Girls’ Championship this year and finished in the Top-15 at the CGA Twin States Junior Girls’ Championship and the SCJGA Blade Junior Championship.
- Katherine Schuster of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. is a member of the 2021 graduating class and is verbally committed to play at Clemson University. She is a returning member of the Carolinas Team from 2018. Schuster is the reigning Carolinas Junior Girls’ Player of the Year and is ranked 3rd in the Carolinas Junior Girls’ Rankings. She is also ranked 2nd in the North Carolina Junior Girls’ Rankings. Schuster is the reigning North Carolina Junior Girls’ champion, North and South Junior Girls’ champion and Beth Daniel Junior Azalea champion.
- Deborah Spair of Raleigh, N.C. is a member of the 2020 graduating class. Spair is the 41st ranked junior girl in the Carolinas and is ranked 12th in the North Carolina Junior Girls’ Rankings. Spair recently finished second at the CGA Twin States Junior Girls’ Championship and was a Semi-Finalist at the North Carolina Junior Girls’ Championship.
- Alexis Sudjianto of Charlotte, N.C. is ranked 5th in the Carolinas Junior Girls’ Rankings and 3rd in the North Carolina Junior Girls’ Rankings. She is a returning member of the Carolinas Team from 2018. Sudjianto is the reigning CGA Twin States Junior Girls’ champion and placed 4th at the North and South Junior Girls’ Championship. She also qualified for match play at the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship this summer. Sudjianto is an incoming freshman at Carnegie Mellon University.
- Muskan Uppal of Cornelius, N.C. is ranked 22nd in the Carolinas Junior Girls’ Rankings and 9th in the North Carolina Junior Girls’ Rankings. Uppal recorded a T16 finish at the Carolinas Women’s Amateur and made it to the Round of 16 in the Carolinas Women’s Match Play this year. Uppal is an incoming freshman at the University of Richmond.
Format: Match play team competition of junior girls from Maryland and Virginia versus junior girls from North Carolina and South Carolina. Players compete in four-ball matches in the first round and singles matches in the second round. Each match is worth one point. The Carolinas Team needs 6 points to retain the cup and the Virginia/Maryland team needs 6.5 points to win.
Eligibility: Invitation only. Team members qualify based on CGA Championship exemptions. Players must be 18 years or younger and not yet started college.
