Emma Charles of Hartsville, S.C. and Victoria Hall of Moore, S.C. end their summer golf season in style with a win at the 42nd Carolinas Women’s Four-Ball Championship. The two will play for Anderson University this fall but before they hit their first shots as collegiate teammates, they’ve already etched their names in the history books of Carolinas amateur golf.
“The way we were hitting it today has me feeling really confident about where we are going to be when the season starts,” said Charles. “It's got me even more ready to go and I have two weeks left to wait.”
Charles, an incoming freshman, has yet to tee it up in a collegiate event while Hall, a rising sophomore, was the first golfer in Anderson University history – men's or women's - to make an appearance on the national stage in the NCAA Division II National Golf Championships.
“It feels really great to know that our names will be on the trophy and knowing that even under pressure, that we both played really well,” said Hall. “That’s important going into the season because we'll be playing good teams and be under a lot of pressure. It's a big confidence boost heading into the season.”
The two started the day tied for the lead with Caroline Cahill of Wilmington, N.C. and Natalie Petersen of Holly Springs, N.C. but were able to separate themselves with three early birdies on Nos. 1, 3 and 4.
“We were really consistent off the tee both days,” said Charles. “We didn't miss a lot of fairways but anytime one of us would miss the green, the other would hit the green.”
“We were sticking it closer today and had much easier putts than yesterday,” added Hall.
In a group ahead of them, Jessica and Sarah Spicer of Bahama, N.C. were making moves of their own. The duo started the day one shot off the lead but also got off to hot start with birdies on Nos. 1, 4 and 5. They had a couple bogeys on the back nine but had a strong finish with birdies on Nos. 16, 17 and 18 to put themselves in contention for the title.
“We had no idea that they had caught up to us till we finished on (No.) 18,” said Charles. “The whole time we were neck-and-neck with Natalie and Caroline but we just kept making birdie after birdie.”
The Spicers finished the championship 9-under-par, 135 total. Chaill and Peterson finished tied for third at 6-under-par, 138 total. Callista Rice of Mars Hill, N.C. and Kathryn Carson of Mooresville, N.C. also finished tied for third.
The win marks the first CGA Championship title for both Charles and Hall. The two will compete in their first collegiate event as teammates in September at the Anderson University Invitational at Cobb’s Glen Country Club.
In the Senior Division, Pam Prescott of Piedmont, S.C. and Chrissie Spidell of Anderson, S.C. also claimed their first CGA Championship titles with a 3-under-par, 141 total.
“You play in these things and you hope you can play the best you can play and of course, that never happens,” said Prescott. “But when you have someone that can pick you up when you mess up a hole, that really helps. It means a lot to me because I've played a lot of golf over the summer and I practiced a lot and I'm just so excited to be a CGA champion.”
The duo began the day with a three-shot lead over their nearest competitors but got off to a slow start shooting 1-over-par, 37 on the front side.
“We had a few struggles today but we made birdies where we needed to offset the bogeys,” said Spidell. “We really didn't know where we were until we got in and saw the leaderboard.”
They were able to put together a solid back nine with three birdies and two bogeys to edge out the team of Leigh Armentrout of Greensboro, N.C. and Linda Daniel of Huntersville, N.C. by one shot. Armentrout and Daniel made a strong run at the title on Tuesday firing the low-round of the championship, a 6-under-par, 66. They finished with a two-under-par, 142 to finish in second place.
Kim Briele of New Bern, N.C. and Lea Anne Brown of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. finished in third place with an even par, 144 total.
