Round 1 Results of Dogwood Junior Boys' Championship

DAVIDSON, N.C. (July 30, 2019) -- Round 1 results of the 15th Dogwood State Junior Boys’ Championship at River Run Country Club in Davidson, N.C. on Tuesday, July 30, 2019.

Typical thick rough at River Run Country Club with some tucked hole locations and tough elevated greens brought some challenging conditions today. Andrew Plate of Greensboro, N.C. and Nicholas Matthews of Mebane, N.C. pushed through the challenge finishing round one at two-under-par, 70  to lead 130 players into day two. 

 

Matthews had a steady start with his first birdie of the day on his second hole. A bogey on his fourth hole was nothing to worry about as he drained a long putt closing his first nine holes with a birdie making the turn at one-under-par, 35. He kept a similar momentum going into his final nine holes with three birdies and two bogeys. 

 

According to Matthews, success on this course is between your ears. 

 

“Playing well and shooting low on the course is all mental which is applicable to any course but you really have to take it one shot at a time and commit to executing every shot” said Matthews. 

 

Plate is also feeling confident after his two-under-par, 70 performance today.

 

“I kept it in play from the front nine to the back nine. It gives me some confidence knowing that I can play the course and do the same thing over and over” said Plate.

 

TYGA Coastal Plains Champion, Ayush Bodhale of Huntersville, N.C. is one stroke behind the duo leaders after turning over a new leaf finishing his final nine holes at two-under-par, 34. 

 

Ike Joy of Denver, N.C., Jake Newman of Charlotte, N.C., and Kareem Elkassem of Raleigh, N.C. are tied for fourth position at level-par, 72.  

 

Round two will begin at 8am Wednesday morning and the afternoon groups will begin at 12:30pm. After 36-holes the field will be cut to the low 70 and ties.
