This afternoon’s match play round of 32 at the N.C. Junior Boys’ Championship was filled with excitement. Perhaps the most exciting match of the day was between our number one seed, Peter Fountain of Raleigh, N.C. and Bryan Fang also of Raleigh, N.C.
After nine holes, 14-year-old Fang, the youngest player left in the field at the time, had a 1 up lead over Fountain. Fountain was able to tie the match on their 13th hole of play but two holes later, Fang took back the lead with a birdie of his own on the par-3, 6th hole.
The very next hole, Fountain poured in another birdie to bring the match back to all square. The two teed off on their 18th hole tied. Fang was unable to get up and down for par and Fountain two putted to win the match, 1 up.
“This morning, in the first match, I played solid,” said Fountain. “I wasn't hitting anything very close but I was making a lot of pars. In match play, pars for the most part get it done. If I was making a lot of pars this afternoon I would have lost...Hats off to Bryan...I could have never dreamed of doing that at that age.”
Collectively, the pair shot 11-under-par. Fountain shot 6-under-par, 66 and didn’t miss a green in regulation throughout both of his matches. Fang shot 5-under-par, 67 and his only bogey came on the final hole.
“After winning a match like that, I definitely have a lot of momentum because we both played so well,” said Fountain. “I felt like I really earned that win so it makes me feel good going into tomorrow.”
Fountain will move on to the round of 16 being played Thursday morning where he will face off against Austin Alexander of Rutherfordton, N.C.
Alexandar, the 49th seed, has already pulled off two upsets in the first two rounds. In his morning match, he defeated the 16th seed, Ian Johnson of Cornelius, N.C., 4 and 3. In the round of 32, he beat the 48th seed, Jack Hart of Charlotte, N.C., 5 and 4. He’ll have his work cut out for him in the round of 16.
Randall Hudson of New Bern, N.C. shot a 6-under-par, 30 on his front nine and found himself 4 up in his match against Parker Truesdale of Canton, N.C. Truesdale fought back and was only one down going into No. 18. Tee shots down the fairway and two good approach shots resulted in pars by both players to advance Hudson to the round of 16 where he will face off against Matias La Grutta of Cary, N.C.
We started the championship with 146 players but are now down to just 16 and are just four rounds away from crowning our 52nd N.C. Junior Boys’ champion.
The round of 16 begins Thursday morning and winners will play their quarterfinal matches in the afternoon.
Championship format is match play with 18 holes of stroke play qualifying to determine the top 64 players on Tuesday, June 25. Once a player loses a match, they are eliminated from the tournament.
