Fountain Earns No. 1 Seed at NC Junior Boys'
Peter Fountain of Raleigh, N.C. shot an 8-under, 64 to claim medalist honors and earn the No. 1 seed.

It was a bit of a surprise to see so many low scores in stroke-play qualifying at a fierce Lonnie Poole Golf Course. What’s not a surprise is who shot the lowest score. Peter Fountain of Raleigh, N.C. proved to everyone why he’s the top-ranked N.C. junior golfer in the North Carolina Junior Boys’ Championship field.
Fountain fired an eight-under-par, 64 to claim medalist honors and the number one seed going into the match play round of 64. Fountain’s momentum formed quite early in the round as he carded three birdies in his first four holes.
“I know this course really well,” said Fountain. “I hadn’t been playing great but its been close. I’ve been hitting it well. It was one of those days where I was hitting them close and making the putts.”
With three more days to go in the championship, Fountain isn’t resting on his laurels after his stroke play round.
“It all starts fresh tomorrow,” said Fountain. “The 64 seed has just as likely a shot as the number one seed. You have to take it one shot at a time in match play.”
Nicholas Matthews of Mebane, N.C. and Alex Heffner of Harrisburg, N.C. both finished stroke play qualifying at six-under-par, 66.
“Since summer started, I’ve been working pretty hard,” said Matthews. “All aspects of my game continue to improve so I felt I was in really good condition coming into this event; especially since I not only love this course but its in immaculate condition right now.”
Players with scores of 76 or better automatically advanced to the round of 64. A total of fourteen players who shot 5-over-par, 77 competed in a playoff beginning on No. 16 for the final four spots. The playoff ended on the par-4, 18th hole; the third hole in the playoff.
Round of 64 begins Wednesday morning and winners will play round of 32 matches in the afternoon.
Championship format is match play with 18 holes of stroke play qualifying to determine the top 64 players on Tuesday, June 25. Once a player loses a match, they are eliminated from the tournament.
Entry is open to any male amateur golfer ages 8-18 as of June 28, 2019, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.3.
