Preview: 93rd Carolinas Women's Amateur

 

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (June 17, 2019) -- The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct the 93^rd Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship at Ballantyne Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. from June 19-21, 2019.

Players to watch:

• Kathryn Carson of Mooresville, N.C. has been knocking on the door of the Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship title for the last two years. In last year’s championship, she finished in fourth place and in 2017 she finished in a tie for sixth. Carson is coming in hot off a win at the North Carolina State Amateur Championship held by the North Carolina Women's Golf Association in May. The win granted her entry into the North South Amateur at Pinehurst in July.
• Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C., the 2016 Carolinas Junior Girls’ Player of the Year is a five-time CGA champion including the 2018 North Carolina Junior Girls’ Championship and the 2018 Twin States Junior Girls Championship.  Hawkins just completed her freshman year at Campbell University where she earned golfer of the year and freshman of the year honors in the Big South Conference.
• Courtney McKim of Raleigh, N.C. McKim won her first CGA title at the 2015 Carolinas Women's Four-Ball and is the 2017 Carolinas Women’s Player of the Year. Recent top finishes for McKim include making it to the round of 16 at the 2018 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship  and a second place in the 2018 Women's Eastern Championship. Last year she finished in 10th place in this event. Searching for her first individual win in CGA play, McKim is ranked 2nd in the Carolinas.
• Dawn Woodard of Greer, S.C. recently captured the 2019 Women’s South Carolina Golf Association State Amateur Championship after a five-hole playoff. The record-setting win marks Woodard’s eighth career victory in the event. Woodard is also a three-time U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur medalist.
• Jodee Tindal of Rock Hill, S.C. is half of last year’s Carolinas Women’s Four-Ball Championship winning team along with her sister Jaelyn. Tindal finished in second place earlier this year at the Carolinas Young Amateur and was a semifinalist in the Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship. Tindal played in 11 tournaments for the College of Charleston Cougars during the 2018-19 season with nine starts and had a scoring Average of 73.91. She claimed co-medalist honors at the Boston College Intercollegiate with rounds of 71, 73 and 74 to finish at 4-over-par for the tournament.
• Jessica Spicer of Bahama, N.C. won her second CGA title earlier this year at the Carolinas Young Amateur. In May, she finished in a tie for second place at the North Carolina State Amateur Championship held by the North Carolina Women's Golf Association. She also finished runner-up in the 2018 Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship.

The Rees Jones-designed Ballantyne Country Club, located in the heart of Charlotte’s Ballantyne Neighborhood, features Bermuda Grass Fairways, TifEagle Bermuda Grass Greens and Zeon Zoysia Tees. Ballantyne Country Club has hosted two previous Carolinas Golf Association Championships including the 2008 Carolinas Women’s Senior and the 2018 North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship.

The Carolinas Women's Amateur Championship was inherited by the Carolinas Golf Association from the Carolinas Women's Golf Association in 2013. The championship began in 1922 and annually crowns the women's amateur champion of the Carolinas.

The championship is conducted at 54 holes of stroke play with a Championship division and Carolinas division (shorter course).

This competition includes gross scores only for the Championship division and gross and net scores for the Carolinas division. Players in the championship division are flighted using 36-hole scores. Players in the Carolinas division are pre-flighted within their division by Handicap Index®.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who maintains a residence in North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index®.
