Goff Takes Leads After Round 2 of the NC Am

GASTONIA, N.C. (June 14, 2019) -- Second round results of the 59th North Carolina Amateur Championship at the Gaston Country Club in Gastonia, N.C. on Friday, June 14, 2019. (6,995 yards, Par 35-35--70, Course Rating 74.4/135).

Alex Goff of Kings Mountain, N.C. has the lead heading into the weekend at the North Carolina Amateur Championship after shooting the low round of the tournament so far; a five-under-par, 65. A first round score of 1-over, 71 gives Goff a two day total of 4-under-par, 166.

“Yesterday was an indifferent day. I didn't feel like I played good but I didn't play bad,” said Goff. “Some of the pins were tough but today I hit it really, really good. By my score you would have thought that I would have putted really good but I honestly didn’t make a lot of putts I just hit it really good.”

Goff took full advantage of the two par fives today making threes on both of them. He made what he described as "a little easy chip" on No. 7 and a putt on No. 13 for eagles. He had two more birdies in his round and only one blemish, a bogey on the par-3, No. 8.

Goff holds a one-shot lead over his nearest competitors with 36 holes to play in the championship.

“I put myself into contention so now I just have to take it shot-by-shot,” said Goff. “I can't get too far ahead of myself. If I make a few bogeys it's not the end of the world. I just have to play smart golf like I did today and the scores will take care of themselves.”

Our first round leader and 2001 N.C. Amateur champion, Chad Wilfong of Charlotte, N.C. shot a one-over, 71 today to put himself in a tie for second place heading into the weekend.

“I left a little bit out there, but I hit it okay,” said Wilfong. “I thought the course played a little bit tougher today. The greens were rolling a little bit faster and the pins were definitely more difficult. Especially on the harder holes. So 71 isn't a bad score.”

Steven Dellinger of Gastonia, N.C. will complete the final threesome tomorrow after shooting a 4-under-par, 66 in the second round. Dellinger also shot a first round score of one-over, 71.

Our 2009, N.C. Amateur champion, Mark McMillen of Cary, N.C. will play this weekend after finishing his first 36 holes at seven-over, 147.

The North Carolina Amateur Championship is a 72-hole, stroke play event. After tomorrow’s round, the field will be cut to the low 60 scores and ties for the final two rounds. An on-course playoff is used to break a tie for the championship.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by June 13, 2019, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 10.4.
