Willis Takes Early Lead at SC Amateur Match Play

Nick Willis of Cowpens, S.C. carded a six-under-par, 66 to lead in the first round of the 47th South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at Columbia Country Club in Blythewood, S.C.
“I felt a little bit of pressure coming down the last few holes, because it has been a while since I have been that deep,” said Willis. “So I feel pretty good that I hit some shots with some pressure, but I know that today doesn't really matter. I mean I could have shot 80 today and may not make the cut, but I am just glad that I am in position to be in the match play.”
Zach Bishop of Travelers Rest, S.C. finished in a close second shooting a four-under-par, 68.
“I got off to a really good start,” said Bishop. “First hole I made birdie and then kind of made a few pars to settle in and I was just hitting a bunch of greens. The weather wasn’t great this morning, but it worked out. I had another birdie at the turn. Then I made an eagle on the back side to kind of get it going and then made a bunch of pars coming in.”
Jack Parrott of Columbia, S.C. finished in third place with a three-under-par, 69. Parrott got off to a great start with three birdies in his first seven holes and he managed to stay in that position through his last 11 holes.
The field will be cut to the top 31 scores from the stroke play portion of the event. Defending champion, Christian Salzer of Sumter, S.C. will be seeded number one. Players will be seeded based on their stroke play performance and the round of 32 and 16 matches will be held Friday. The quarterfinal and semifinal will be held on Saturday, June 15. The final championship match will be held on Sunday, June 16.

The championship is contested at 36 holes of individual stroke play to determine 32 qualifiers for Match Play. The defending champion is seeded number one for match play if otherwise eligible.
Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by June 12, 2019, and is a legal resident of South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active USGA Handicap Index® that does not exceed 10.4 at a CGA member club.

First Round of Stroke Play Qualifying

Thursday, June 13
Second round of stroke play qualifying.
Cut to low 32 players for match play, playoff if necessary.

First and second round of match play (18 holes each round).

Quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of match play (18 holes each round).
Sunday, June 16
Championship match (18 holes).
