Preview: 23rd NC Junior Girls' Championship

 

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (June 10, 2019) -- The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct the 23rd North Carolina Junior Girls’ Championship at Wilson Country Club in Wilson, N.C. from June 11-14, 2019.

Players to watch:

• Katherine Schuster of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. has a scoring average of 73 and is ranked third in the N.C. Junior Girls' Rankings. She was named the 2018 Carolinas Junior Girls’ Player of the Year and won the 14-15 Age Division at the 2018 Drive, Chip and Putt Augusta National Golf Club. Schuster was part of the 2018 First Team N.C. Girls' All-State Golf Team.
• Alexis Sudjianto of Charlotte, N.C. was the finalist in last year’s N.C. Junior Girls’ Championship and is currently ranked fourth in the N.C. Junior Girls' Rankings. She also finished in second place at the Carolinas Girls’ Championship. She won the HJGT Elite Series at Bear Creek Golf Club and was the 2018 recipient of the David Parrott award. Sudjianto was part of the 2018 First Team N.C. Girls' All-State Golf Team.
• Maria Atwood of Holly Springs, N.C. is ranked fifth in the N.C. Junior Girls’ Rankings. Atwood is the reigning Carolinas Girls’ Champion and has had several top-ten finishes in both CGA and TYGA events over the last year. She has had four top-15 finishes already in 2019. Atwood was part of the 2018 First Team N.C. Girls' All-State Golf Team.
• Ana Tsiros of Asheville, N.C.. is ranked in the top ten in the N.C. Junior Girls' Rankings. She had first-place finishes last October at both the NCHSAA Girls’ 3A State Championship and the NCHSAA 3A West Regional Championship. Tsiros made it to the Round of 16 in this event last year and was part of the 2018 First Team N.C. Girls' All-State Golf Team. She finished third in the Dogwood State Junior Girls’ and made it to the quarterfinal matches of the Carolinas Women’s Match Play Championship.
• Riley Hamilton of Reidsville, N.C. recently placed third in the PKB Girls' Golf Tour - NC - Tar Heel Classic with a closing round of level-par, 72. She also finished third in the NCHSAA - Girls' 3A State Championship last fall. Hamilton was part of the 2018 Second Team N.C. Girls' All-State Golf Team.
• Sophie Holland of Cornelius, N.C. has a scoring average of 77 and placed fourth in last year’s Dogwood State Junior Girls’ Championship. Holland was part of the 2018 Second Team N.C. Girls' All-State Golf Team.
• Anna McDonald of Hickory, N.C. a recent high school graduate placed fourth in the NCHSAA - Girls' 3A State Championship last fall. McDonald made it to the quarterfinal matches in this event last year. She also had a top ten finish in the Hope Valley Junior Invitational. McDonald was part of the 2018 Second Team N.C. Girls' All-State Golf Team.

 

About Wilson Country Club

Wilson Country Club was opened in May 1915 on the site that is currently known as Willow Springs Country Club. The club grew at a rapid rate following WWII and the size of the membership eventually grew too large for its initial home. Unable to expand the facilities, the club moved across town to its current site in 1973. Mr. William Byrd designed the new layout that we are so proud of today. Mr. Byrd designed and remodeled over 100 golf courses during his career which spanned nearly five decades. His Wilson Country Club design still receives rave reviews for its beauty and overall playability. The club has hosted nine Carolinas Golf Association majors including the 2010 NC Men’s Amateur.

Wilson Country Club underwent a renovation in 2005 to modernize the course and improve the putting surfaces. The renowned architect Mr. John Lafoy was chosen to do the renovation and work began in May, 2005. John Lafoy has redesigned over 100 golf courses throughout the country and has redesigned many classic layouts, including those of architects A.W. Tillinghast, Alistair Mackenzie, Seth Raynor, Charles Blair MacDonald and numerous Donald Ross designs. The redesign of Wilson Country Club has certainly made it one of the finest golf courses in North Carolina.

The championship format is 36 holes of stroke play qualifying followed by match play. Top 32 in stroke play qualifying advance to match play.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer ages 12 to 18 as of June 14, 2018, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club. Entries are subject to rejection at any time, including during the event, by the CGA or the host club.

Scoring will be provided by the CGA throughout the championship, offering 9 and 18-hole updates. Live updates will also be available on the CGA’s official Twitter account, @cgagolf1909.
