Perry and Harwell Take Early Lead at NC Senior Am

ADVANCE, N.C. (May 7, 2019) -- First round results of the Carolinas Golf Association's 34th North Carolina Senior Amateur Championship at Bermuda Run Country Club in Advance, N.C. on Tuesday, May 7.

It's no surprise to see who sits atop the leaderboard at the North Carolina Senior Amateur Championship. Russ Perry of Winston-Salem and Steve Harwell of Mooresville are familiar names lately in the headlines of amateur golf.

In April, Harwell was part of the championship winning team of the Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship played at the Dataw Island Club’s Cotton Dike Course in Dataw Island, S.C. Less than two weeks ago he won the prestigious Coleman Invitational’s senior division at historic Seminole Golf Club in June Beach, FL.

Perry was recently named the Tufts Carolinas Super Senior Player of the Year after a bevy of wins and top finishes throughout 2018.

Both men shot 3-under-par, 69 at Bermuda Run Country Club's East Course to take the first-round lead.

Only two other players in the 144-man field shot under par including Mike Shoffner of Graham and Dean Channell of Cary who shot 1-under-par, 71. Harrison Rutter of Winston-Salem was the only player in the field to shoot even par, 72.

Play will resume tomorrow morning with tee times starting at 8:00 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. off the No. 1 and no. 10 tees. The field will be cut to the low 60 scores and ties. Currently 67 players are at 8-over-par or better after 18 holes.
