Two weather delays put a damper on the second round of stroke play at the Carolinas Four-Ball Championship but after two separate playoffs, we have determined the match play seeding and the winner of the Joe B. McCarley Cup given to the stroke play medalist team.
Two teams were tied for first place after 36 holes of stroke play competition. Bobby Dean of Mathews, N.C. and Dean Preston of Charlotte, N.C. tied for the low round on Saturday with an 8-under-par, 62. Clay Watkins of Willow Spring, N.C. and Stephen Lavenets of Hillsborough, N.C. also shot 8-under-par, 62. Both teams sat at 12-under-par, 128 after 36 holes of stroke play and returned on Sunday morning for a playoff to determine who’s name would be etched on the Joe B. McCarley Cup.
It didn’t take long for Watkins and Lavenets to knock off last year’s medalist team of Dean and Preston. Watkins made a birdie on the first playoff to claim the top seed and medalist honors.
“He made it easy,” Lavenets said about the stroke play portion of the championship. “Clay would hit a good shot and I could take dead aim. We just played well. It was a very easy round because he was always in play and I was able to make a few putts.”
A playoff was also held on Sunday morning to determine which teams would make the match play portion of the championship. Six teams finished at a 7-under-par, 133 at the end of 36-hole stroke play competition. It took six playoff holes to determine the 16 seed, but after making a short birdie putt on No. 18, Dan Hogan and James Braun of Blythewood, S.C. claimed the last spot and will face Watkins and Lavenets in the round of 16.
The first two rounds of match play will commence on Sunday morning and afternoon. After three rounds of match play, the scheduled 18-hole championship match will be played on Monday afternoon.
