CGA Amateurs Retain the Tar Heel Cup

WALLACE, N.C. (April 2, 2019) - The 25th Tar Heel Cup took place at River Landing Country Club’s Landing Course in Wallace, N.C. featuring the top amateurs and PGA professionals from the state of North Carolina. Due to weather concerns for the second day of play, concurring four-ball and individual match play rounds were completed on Monday.

For the professionals to take back the cup, 6½ points were needed to win the matches, and the amateurs could retain the cup with a 6-point halve.

The four-ball matches were split with the amateurs winning two matches and the PGA professionals winning two. Amateurs Chris Cassette and Clay Holland def. Chris Haarlow, PGA and Michael Hutcheon, PGA 4&2. Samual Echikson and Thomas Owen defeated Matt Vick, PGA and Steve Isley, PGA 3&2. The professionals were able to gain some momentum from John Faidley, PGA and CPGA Player of the Year, Steve Scott, PGA who defeated Scott Harvey and Ryan Nagy 5&4. In the closest four-ball match, host Larry George, PGA and Cory Schneider, PGA defeated Sherrill Britt and Daniel Neveu 2&1. 

The individual matches proved to be more competitive and the difference maker. The amateurs were able to win five of the eight matches. 

In a valiant effort, Larry George, PGA, Cory Schneider, PGA and Steve Scott, PGA each won both of their matches for the PGA professionals. Conversely, amateurs Samuel Echikson, Thomas Owen, Chris Cassetta and Clay Holland won their individual and team matches. 

The amateur team come out victorious and retained the Tar Heel Cup with a final score of 7-5.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
