Harrison Rhoades of Raleigh, N.C. finished the first round of the 58th N.C. Amateur Championship with an eight-under-par, 64 and a one stroke lead. Rhoades racked up nine birdies and just one bogey on his way to the low score of the day.
Rhoades credited a good start with getting his round going. "I dropped a few putts which made me ease into my round early which was huge."
Rhoades' fellow competitors, Clay Holland of Greensboro, N.C. and Quinn Riley of Raleigh, N.C., raved about his putting as well. "I've never seen that many putts go in. It was fun to watch," said Holland.
Rhoades also admitted to getting a little lucky when it came to his drives. "I hit a few bad drives but kind of got away with them," said the N.C. State junior, "I had a lot of fortunate breaks where if I was a yard this way it might have been in the rough."
In second place is Colfax, N.C. native, Paul Slomkowski. The 52-year-old kept a clean scorecard with 5 birdies and an eagle on his way to a seven-under-par finish.
Brandon Einstein of Clemmons, N.C. sits in third place at five-under-par, 2016 champion, Nick Lyerly of Salisbury, N.C. is in fourth at four-under-par, and rounding put the top-five and three-under-par are Timothy Driver of Holly Springs, N.C. and Matthew Rogers of Huntersville, N.C, who still has two holes to finish.
There were two delays for lightning in the afternoon, forcing a suspension of play for darkness at the end of the day. Three groups will finish their first rounds on Friday morning.
The North Carolina Amateur Championship is a 72-hole, stroke play event. The field will be cut to the top 60 players and ties after 36 holes.
