Carson Cruises in First Day of Cas W Match Play

Kathryn Carson advanced to the Round of 16 and secured medalist honors at the Carolinas Women's Match Play

(July 25, 2017) -- Stroke play qualifying and First Round match play results of the 20th Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship at Rock Hill Country Club in Rock Hill, S.C. on Tuesday, July 25th (Championship Division - 6,085 yards, par 72, Course Rating 75.3/131 | Carolinas Division - 5,234 yards, par 72, Course Rating 71.0/119).

Kathryn Carson of Mooresville, N.C. was the only player in red numbers on Tuesday, winning medalist honors at the 20th Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship at Rock Hill Country Club in Rock Hill, S.C. Her one-under-par 71 secured her the number one overall seed for match play and was three shots better than Jodee Tindal of Rock Hill, who locked up the number two seed. "I have been playing really solid lately," remarked Carson. "My putting game has been strong and has helped me make a lot of birdies." Now with the stroke play qualifying portion complete, Carson, future East Carolina Pirate, looks to keep things simple moving forward. "I just have to stay patient and focus on playing my game."

The Championship Division was cut to 32 players for the match play portion of the championship.

Number one overall seed Kathryn Carson of Mooresville, N.C. cruised to a 3-and-2 victory over Whitney Carter of Rock Hill, S.C. Carson started on a mission to control the match early, jumping out to a three-up lead on her first three holes. From there, the East Carolina Pirate admitted she played conservative, knowing she had the upper hand. "I was playing so she had to catch me," said Carson. "I did not want to mess anything up for myself. I was just looking to play solid the rest of the way and make her do something to beat me." Carson also expressed that her putting game slipped and will be an area of focus for her heading into the next round.

Number two seed and Rock Hill Country Club member Jodee Tindal also advanced, defeating Emily Stinson of Charlotte, N.C. 5-and-4. Twin sisters and Virginia Tech rising sophomores Jessica and Sarah Spicer of Bahama, N.C. won their matches 8-and-7 and 2-and-1 respective.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 13th birthday by July 25, 2017, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club.
