51st Cas Father-Son & 20th Parent-Child Previews

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (July 19, 2017) -- The Carolinas Golf Association's 51st Father-Son Championship and 20th Carolinas Parent-Child will take place Friday, July 21st at Pinehurst, N.C. area courses. A total of 642 golfers (321 pairs) will be competing.

The format for both championships is 18 holes of modified alternate shot. Playing in two-person teams, both team members hit from the tee, select one ball to be played, then play alternate shot until the ball is holed. 

51st Carolinas Father-Son Championship

A total of 268 teams will compete in 14 divisions at five championship sites. The overall champion will be determined from the Amateur A division, which will take place at Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club in Pinehurst, N.C. Other hosts clubs include Pinehurst No. 6, Country Club of Whispering Pines (Pines), Legacy Golf Links, and Pinewild Country Club (Magnolia).

Bradley Reep and Brian Reep of Morganton, N.C. are in this year's field to defend their title. Last year, the pair won in a playoff against Doug and John Coleman of Hickory, N.C. An 85-yard wedge shot by Brian dropped the ball five feet from the cup, giving them the tap-in par that would secure them the championship. "It is a great feeling," Brian remarked on being a defending champion. "I am looking forward very much to defend our title. Mid Pines is a Ross Classic, and it should be a great venue for the Father-Son format."

Joining them in the field is 2015 champions Walter Todd Sr. and Walt Todd Jr. of Laurens, S.C. The pair won in 2012 as well. Todd Sr. also won in 2011 with his other son, Neal. Some of the past Father-Son champions in this year's field include:

• 2006 and 2010 champions Neil and Steve Wilkinson of Wilmington, N.C.

• 2009 champs Jim Pridgen of Jamestown, N.C. and Brent Pridgen of Lewisville, N.C.

• 2007 champions Jackie and Brent Parrish of Clinton, N.C.

• 2005 champions Banks and Banks Wood Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.

• 2004 champions Eugene and Jeff Spencer of Blythewood, S.C.

• 1990 champion Steve Lassiter of Pinehurst, N.C., playing this year with his son, Will.

Entry is open to any team comprised of a father and son, stepfather and stepson, father-in-law and son-in-law or grandfather and grandson. At least one member of each team must: 1. be a legal resident of one of the Carolinas; 2. be a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and have an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club or is a golf professional employed at a CGA member club. A team is eligible if one partner is an amateur member of a CGA member club
or if one partner is a golf professional employed by a CGA member club. Pro-Pro teams are NOT eligible.
 

20th Carolinas Parent-Child Championship

53 pairs will compete for the 20th Parent-Child Championship at Pinewild Country Club (Magnolia) in Pinehurst, N.C.

Defending champions Gary and Lauren Robinson of Fayetteville, N.C. look to add a fifth Parent-Child championship win to their collection. The pair took home three-straight titles from 2011-2013. Other past champions in the field include:

• 2014 and 2015 champions Kevin and Jodee Tindal of Rock Hill, S.C.

• 2009 champion Gig Hilton of Lexington, N.C., playing this year with Stacy Vanzant.

Entry is open to any team comprised of a parent and child, regardless of age, in any gender combination excluding male-male. Step-parents, grandparents and in-laws are eligible. At least one member of each team must: 1) be a legal resident of one of the Carolinas; 2) be a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and have an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club or is a golf professional employed at a CGA member club. A team is eligible if one partner is an amateur member of a CGA member club or if one partner is a golf professional employed by a CGA member club. Pro-Pro teams are NOT eligible.

 

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)
