Hinkle Advances to Final Day of SC Jr Match Play

Defending champion Brady Hinkle easily advanced to the final day of the South Carolina Junior Match Play

Round of 16 Results

Defending boys' champion Brady Hinkle of Lancaster and defending girls' champion Alyssa Campbell of Lake Wylie advanced to the quarterfinals of the 40th South Carolina Junior Match Play Championship at Cherokee National Golf Club in Gaffney, S.C.

Hinkle secured his spot in the quarterfinals by defeating #18 seed Nicholas Mayfield of Rock Hill 3-and-1. After Mayfield claimed the first hole with a par, Hinkle responded with a par of his own on No. 3 to make the match all square. Then, a birdie on the par-4 fifth gave him a 1-up advantage that he never relinquished. From then on, Hinkle recorded a clean scorecard, a goal he was trying to achieve coming into the day. "Making it this far in this heat is a blessing," said Hinkle. "I made four birdies, so hopefully I can keep that momentum going into the next round."

Campbell advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-and-2 win over #17 seed Kayla Bartemeyer of Mount Pleasant. With 36-holes under her belt from the previous day, Bartemeyer started hot, recording birdies on No. 2 and No. 3 to go 2-up. Campbell then took advantage of bogeys by Bartemeyer on No. 6 and No. 9 to make the match all square heading to the turn. "It is a new nine," Campbell remarked about her mentality heading to the turn. "I was able to start all over and play it as best as I can." With a clear conscience of her previous 9-holes, Campbell made par on the par-4 11th to claim the hole, finding herself 1-up for the first time in the match. A birdie putt on the par-4 16th clinched her victory. "Going into the next round, I need to play more accurate and be smarter. I need to make things easier for myself if I want to win."

The #18 seed Ian Faulconer of Simpsonville defeated medalist and #2 seed Manning Sloop of Rock Hill 1-up to secure his spot in the quarterfinals. The win was just one of just two upsets in the boys' round of 16. The pair was all square through 16 holes, when a birdie by Faulconer on the par-3 17th gave him a 1-up advantage going into the final hole. As they both approached the green, Sloop found his ball in the right side bunker. Once he had assessed his best approach, he blasted his bunker shot roughly 30 feet from the hole. After Sloop failed to convert for par, Faulconer missed a 10 foot par putt that left the ball inches from the hole. Sloop conceded, giving Faulconer the win. "He hit the ball better today, but I just putted better," said Faulconer. "I made six birdies and three 20-footers. I just have to keep putting good and I will be good."

Quarterfinal Results

On a day where the heat index reached 98 degrees, defending champion Brady Hinkle of Lancaster won 6-and-5 over #9 seed Garrett Cooper of Cowpens to advance to the semifinals of the 40th South Carolina Junior Match Play Championship at Cherokee National Golf Club in Gaffney, S.C. Hinkle did all of his work early, scorching through his first nine holes. The College of Charleston commit was 6-up at the turn, making five birdies; a lead that was insurmountable for Cooper to overcome. "I just went out there and played my game," said Hinkle. "I got some good holes going early and just kept the momentum going." While looking forward to tomorrows matches, Hinkle's main focus is to have fun. "If I can continue to play my game, I am going to be hard to take down."

Zack Gordon, a resident of Gaffney and the #4 overall seed, knocked off #5 seed Tyler Gray of Lugoff 3-and-2, locking in his spot in the semifinals. "I just kept taking it hit hole-by-hole," said Gordon. "I just kept hitting shots and they went in." Gordon, a Clemson University commit, will face Hinkle in the first semifinal match. "It is going to be tough [to beat Hinkle]. I am going to have to make a lot of birdies to have a chance."

Joining Hinkle and Gordon in the semifinals is #18 seed Ian Faulconer of Simpsonville, who defeated #10 seed Keegan Vaugh of Myrtle Beach 3-and-2, and #3 seed Reed Bentley of Wellford, who defeated #6 seed Walker Jones of Sumter 6-and-5.

Girls' Division

In the biggest upset of the girls' division, #8 seed Phoebe Carles of Clinton defeated defending champion Alyssa Campbell of Lake Wylie 4-and-3. The pair was all square at the turn, but Carles converted a bogey putt on the par-4 10th that was enough to win the hole, putting her 1-up. After the pair halved the par-4 11th, Carles went on a run to claim three of the next four holes en route to victory. "I was trying to stay away from the big numbers and make sure to come away with as many pars as I could," Carles remarked on the advice from her friend Baylee Evans. "I have been listening to her advice because she has played in a lot of these tournaments. She was a good mentor to tell me what to do."

Jalen Castle of West Columbia overcame a 4-down deficit to defeat Baylee Evans of Lancaster 2-and-1. Evans made par on the par-4 seventh, going 4-up heading to No. 8 tee. However, a miscue by Evans on the par-4 eighth gave Castle the spark she needed. From there, Castle would capitalize on three bogeys and a par from Evans to claim four out of the next five holes to make the match all square. Then, Castle used a birdie and a par on No. 15 and No. 16 respectfully to pull away and secure the win. "I was just believing in myself," said Castle on her monumental comeback. "I thought to myself 'If I make some putts, I will be able to comeback'; I just never gave up." Tomorrow's focus for Castle will be her putting game, as she felt she left a few putts on the table. "[Putting] is the name of the game. I am just going to try to hit it far and go from there."

Joining Carles and Castle in the semifinals is Katie Whitfield of Clemson, who defeated Chloe Grace Holder of Williamston 2-up, and Elle Johnson of Inman, who made a 50 foot eagle putt on the par-4 first to win the match in 19 holes over #3 seed Emily Dunlap of Greenville.

Entry is open to any male or female amateur golfer who has not reached their 19th birthday by July 14, 2017, who has not started college, is a legal resident of South Carolina, is a member or their parent is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA handicap index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.4.
