Manning Sloop of Rock Hill won medalist honors in the Boys' Division of the 40th South Carolina Junior Match Play Championship at Cherokee National Golf Club in Gaffney, S.C. A two-day total of five-under-par, 139 overall, earned him the number two overall seed. Defending champion Brady Hinkle of Lancaster will be the number one overall seed.
Sloop lost in last year's championship match to Hinkle, but he looks to carry his momentum into match play. "[This win] gives me a lot of confidence knowing that I can play good on this course," said Sloop. "I putted the ball pretty well and made some long putts, so that always helps." With his success off the tee, Sloop noted that hitting good iron shots will help give him chances for easy birdie putts.
Katie Whitfield of Clemson won medalists honors in the Girls' Division, finishing three-over-par, 147 overall, securing the number two overall seed. Defending champion Alyssa Campbell of Lake Wylie will be the number one overall seed. Whitfield's Wednesday total of two-under-par, 70 overall, was the lowest round of the girls' division. "I really did not make any mistakes," said Whitfield. "I made a lot of putts and my up and down game was really good. Overall it was a pretty good day." With a smile on her face, Whitfield stated her confidence is high heading into match play. "It helps me out a lot. To shoot [147 overall] out here is pretty exciting."

Defending champion and number one overall seed Brady Hinkle of Lancaster advanced to the round of 16 after a two up victory over #32 seed Nathan Franks of Roebuck . Both players found themselves on 18 green, but a missed putt by Franks faltered his chance to force extra holes. "[Franks] played some solid golf today," Hinkle remarked about his playing competitor. "It was a grind to go out to get the win." Heading into tomorrow's round, Hinkle stated he has one goal for the rest of match play, "Not to lose with bogeys." "Two of the holes that I lost today I bogeyed. If I am going to lose, I want to lose to a birdie," said Hinkle.
After earning medalist honors earlier in the day, last year's runner-up and number two seed Manning Sloop of Rock Hill defeated #31 seed Zander Briggs of Simpsonville 2-and-1 to advance to the next round. Sloop was dormie on the par-4 18th, when the pair halved the hole to give Sloop the victory. "I managed to get the win, but it got really close at the end," said Sloop. "I was kind of nervous coming into 18, but I knew that I had two holes left and I managed to make par to win." Despite the close finish, Sloop feels confident going into tomorrow. "If I can hit some greens and get closer to the hole, I think I will be in good shape."
Number eight seed Connor Moore of Bluffton defeated #25 seed Zack Phillips of Inman in a 22-hole extravaganza. Reminiscing on a 20-foot putt that forced extra holes, Moore walked off the 21st hole having missed a short putt that would have given him the win. Not discouraged, he hit a drive that placed the ball 243 yards to the flag. He followed that drive with a 3-wood to 25 feet, ultimately making the putt that carried him on to the round of 16. "I knew he had about 10 feet for birdie, knowing he was going to make it," said Moore. "I just hit the line and got it to fall."
A playoff match was used to determine the final seed for the girls' match play round of 16. Kayla Bartemeyer of Mount Pleasant won 3-and-2 over Lillie Smith of Fort Mill.
