Two Tied After 36-Holes at Carolinas Sr Four-Ball

Robby Kirby and Nolan Mills, III shot the lowest round of the tournament at 11-under 61

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (June 8, 2017) -- Second round results of the 49th Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship at Seabrook Island Club in Johns Island, S.C. on Thursday, June 8th (6,291 yards, Par 36-36--72, Course Rating 71.7/137).

After starting the day T-8 in rainy conditions, Robby Kirby and Nolan Mills, III of Charlotte, N.C. jumped seven spots up the leaderboard into a tie for first after carding 11-under 61, 14-under-par 130 overall in the second round of the 49th Carolinas Senior Four-Ball at Seabrook Island Club. Their 11-under-par is the lowest round of the tournament heading into Friday's final 18-holes of play.

After a bogey on the par-4 fourth, the pair rattled off five straight birdies to cap off their front-nine, four of which were by Mills. "Nolan's irons were phenomenal today, particularly on the front-nine," said Kirby. As they headed to their back nine, Kirby went on a birdie tirade of his own, recording all four of the duos birdies as well as an eagle on the shortened par-4 14th. "There are a lot of great competitors in this field," said Kirby. "To stay ahead of the pack, we can't rest on our laurels and have to continue to make birdies."

Tied with Kirby and Mills III are Walter Todd, Sr. of Laurens, S.C. and Todd Hendley of Greer, S.C. Hendley carried the pair the majority of the day, recording seven of the duos eight birdies as well as an eagle on the shortened par-4 14th. "He did all the playing today," said Todd. "I hope that I can have a little more contribution tomorrow." Despite playing alongside defending champions Dr. James Pearson and Jim Grainger, there was no added pressure to outplay them. "We just played our game," Hendley said. "They are right there with us, we just have to continue to putt the ball and we will have a chance."

Pearson and Grainger, both of Charlotte, N.C. are just one-shot back of the lead, finishing the day eight-under-par, 13-under 131 overall. "We were more consistent today," said Grainger. Pearson, who posted only one birdie yesterday, carded five of the pairs eight birdies. "Dr. Pearson played very well; I was kind of his caddy today. I did hit a couple of shots, but he was the one who made most of them." As a two-time defending champion, Grainger has not been used to playing from behind in this tournament. "The past two years, we basically won the tournament on the first day. I think [playing from behind] is more fun; you are not worried about holding onto the lead." To capture his second straight title in three years, the pair noted they needed to play more aggressive Friday to secure victory.

Charlie Parks of Asheboro, N.C. and Doug Owens of Albemarle, N.C. as well as Brad Burris of High Point, N.C. and Kevin King of Bluffton, S.C. are T-4 at 11-under par 133 overall.

The cut line fell at even-par 144. 30 teams made the field for the final round of play.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 55th birthday by June 7, 2017, and is a resident of North Carolina or South Carolina. The championship is conducted at 54 holes of four-ball stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 30 scores and ties for the final round.
